About the Author
Stuart Greenbaum is a leading authority on banks. Formerly dean of the John M. Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis, he spent twenty years at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, where he was the Director of the Banking Research Center and the Norman Strunk Distinguished Professor of Financial Institutions. Three times he was appointed to the Federal Savings and Loan Advisory Council and was twice officially commended for extraordinary public service. He is founding editor of the Journal of Financial Intermediation.

As the John E. Simon Professor of Finance and Senior Associate Dean of Programs at the Olin School of Business, Washington University, St. Louis, Anjan Thakor works in both academia and the business world. Prior to joining the Olin School, he was Edward J. Frey Professor of Banking and Finance at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, where he also served as chairman of the Finance area. He has worked with many companies, including Whirlpool Corporation, Allision Engine Co., Citigroup, RR Donnelley, Dana Corporation, Anheuser-Busch, Zenith Corporation, Lincoln National Corporation, and J.P. Morgan.

Arnoud Boot is Professor of Corporate Finance and Financial Markets at the University of Amsterdam and Director of the Amsterdam Center for Law and Economics. He is Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research and at the Davidson Insitute at the University of Michigan.

Great Graphic Novel

This is a good compendium of a really good comic. It is a story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jew, who is being interviewed by his son Art about his time just before WWII and his imprisonment in Auschwitz-Birkenau. This comic is so very well written, that certain times when I was reading it I felt that Vladek was my grandpa telling me his story in person. You really get to know both main characters on a personal level which just connects the story to your heart even more and draws you in to continue reading. Trust me, get the complete Maus, cause you will start reading and never stop.

Fantastic!

This was different from what I expected. I wasn't sure what I would be reading when I started this book. I knew Maus was a Holocaust story, but I didn't know what type of story it would be. Calling it a "contemporary classic of immeasurable significance" is an understatement. I think powerful is a better adjective. Heartbreaking. Captivating..... those would work too.

The people in the book were depicted as various types of animals which I was both disturbed by and thankful for. I found it very interesting that the author chose to depict his "characters" as animals. The dehumanization aspect was not lost on me-- afterall, isn't that what Hitler and the Nazis did to the Jews?

Given the subject matter, I'm not sure how I would have taken to this book if it had the detail that most graphic novels are known for. The drawings lacked facial expression and some detail, but the point was still made. I still cried when a baby mouse's head was smashed against it because I knew what the mouse represented.

One thing that I did find bothersome was the constant switching between the present and past. I could see it being confusing for some people. However, I thought it was important to show how the past events shaped the father into the person that he became as a survivor. It wasn't choppy per se, but some type of textual feature to indicate that the present was occuring would have been better I think.

Overall, given that this is such hard content to work with, I think the author did a nice job of sharing his father's horrifying experience in a tasteful way that might make learning about the Holocaust more accessible to future generations. The story was focused on one family's tale, yet it managed to tell about an entire nation. It saddens me to think how little people know about this dark time in history. We are so quick to glance over it or pretend it didn't happen exactly the way history books tell us. But I have met a survivor. I have read her story; and I won't forget.

Spiegelman's Masterpiece

Spiegelman's Masterpiece

Holocaust is the type of word nobody wants neither to pronounce nor remember. However, Art Spiegelman, an American cartoonist and son of a polish-Jewish Holocaust survivor, seems to remind us through his masterpiece comic book, Maus, that the Holocaust is one of the events humankind will never forget. Maus, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, is not a simple book. It can be classified as a mixed of genres book as it is a narrative book, history book, comic novel, but also a memoir and autobiography, all condensed in two main parts. Part I, My Father Bleeds History, which is dived into 6 chapters, and Part II, And Here My Troubles Began, divided into 5, are carefully and intentionally well-structured. This is how, all sections fit together, even though there is a movement back and forth between the father-son relationship and the father's (Vladeck's) recall of his experience as a Jew in the Holocaust. This constant and unexpected switch fascinates and interests the reader with both the plot and author's method to communicate his message, which is his unique animal-drawing style.

With Nazis portrayed as cats, Poles as pigs, Americans as dogs, British as fish, Swedes as deer, French as frogs, and Jews as mice, Spiegelman depicts humans as animals to emphasize the relevance that the difference in race and nationality seemed to have back in Hitler's time. He certainly knows what he is doing and why he is doing it. As a result, the reader is allowed to connect the dots by simply relating the cat-mice dichotomy relationship with the Nazi-Jew one, and also the cat-dog, Nazi-Americans, cat-fish, Nazi-British, and other relationships. This animal imagery and metaphor usage, gives the reader a better and easier understanding of what to expect to happen with each animal's actions, and also stresses the relationship with the characters rather than on each character itself. But most importantly, representing Jews as mice reinforces the false claims in the two quotes Spiegelman cites in the beginning of each of the two parts of his comic strip. Jews were seen as the greatest vermin and bacteria carrier in mankind, and, therefore, ought to be executed (Spiegelman 164).

As a consequence, the tone of the theme and plot is a sarcastic, horrifying, and dark one. Throughout the entire comic novel, the black and white color persists. No other colors are to be seen. This deathly and obscure setting makes the reader's mind imagine the death camps, feel the tension and fear that Jews must have experienced. The presence of the clear swastika symbol reminds readers that the narrative is based on true facts about the Holocaust. Vladeck's recall of his experience and survival in the first-person gives reliability and legitimacy of Spiegelman's work. Art's story is the voice of many children of survivors' stories. Remote sensing is now a fundamental tool for the mapping, monitoring and management of coral reef ecosystems. Remote sensing offers repeatable, quantitative assessments of habitat and environmental characteristics over spatially extensive areas. As the multi-disciplinary field of coral reef remote sensing continues to mature, results demonstrate that the techniques and capabilities continue to improve. New developments allow reef assessments and mapping to be performed with higher accuracy, across greater spatial areas, and with greater temporal frequency. The increased level of information that remote sensing now makes available also allows more complex scientific questions to be addressed.
     
As defined for this book, remote sensing includes the vast array of geospatial data collected from land, water, ship, airborne and satellite platforms. The book is organized by technology, including: visible and infrared sensing using photographic, multispectral and hyperspectral instruments; active sensing using light detection and ranging (LiDAR); acoustic sensing using ship, autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and in-water platforms; and thermal and radar instruments.

Emphasis and Audience
This book serves multiple roles. It offers an overview of the current state-of-the-art technologies for reef mapping, provides detailed technical information for coral reef remote sensing specialists, imparts insight on the scientific questions that can be tackled using this technology, and also includes a foundation for those new to reef remote sensing. The individual sections of the book include introductory overviews of four main types of remotely sensed data used to study coral reefs, followed by specific examples demonstrating practical applications of the different technologies being discussed. This book has very little content and certainly no "surprising" anything. Additionally, it is improperly formatted: on Android & Kindle Fire, it's mostly just annoying... you see things like lower case "L" pretty much consistently replaced with capital "i" (yes, I reversed those here to make it obvious what I mean) but the majority of characters are encoded so incorrectly that the book is completely unreadable on Kindle DX.

It has gone on until today, when amongst modernist scholars and the self-styled ‘higher critics’, nothing is too disparaging to say about it. In short, the Book of Daniel stands today in such a bloodied, bruised and battered condition, that few would risk their academic careers and reputations by defending even the smallest part of it. Now why should this be? Is it because the archaeological record is set against any notion of authenticity for Daniel? Surely, the answer is no. We shall see that there is a great wealth of fine archaeological and documentary detail which positively shouts the authenticity of Daniel. Not that the public ever get to hear about it, of course. That would never do. But the critics and disparaging scholars know it’s there. It’s just that they tend to keep such information to themselves. The purpose of this present enquiry, therefore, is to bring such information and evidence out into the light of day. For example, the most laughed-at episode in the Book of Daniel is surely that ‘silly and utterly fictitious tale’ about Daniel’s three friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. It is ridiculed at every level and on every side. What is kept from the public, though, is the fact that these individuals, far from being fictional, are actually named in the contemporary cuneiform sources, the records of that same Babylonian Empire into which they’d been exiled. Daniel himself appears twice in these records, and in all cases we are able to add considerably to our knowledge concerning their respective careers at Babylon. This authenticating evidence has been known and documented for a great many years now, yet barely a word of it has been allowed to reach the public. We shall, of course, be considering it here – openly!

The best breakthrough scholarship on DANIEL in decades!

Dr. Bill Cooper---illustrating what real historical scholarship looks like---has investigated, analyzed, and marshalled the hisorical/archaeological evidence that pertains to the authenticity of the book of DANIEL. And what a wealth of evidences that he has accumulated and analyzed, digesting the details that most of us will never have the time to sift through. Truth is stranger than fiction, ofttimes, and the book of DANIEL is a remarkable example of that: the historic Daniel, whom the Lord Jesus Christ called "Daniel the prophet" (see Matthew 24:15; Mark 13:14), is shown--by Dr. Cooper's competent and insightful documentation, to be a political figure well-knon in ancient inscriptions of the Babylonian and Medo-Persian empires. Likewise, Dr. Cooper documents how the secular records of the ancients record the political activities of Daniel's 3 famous friends (best known to us as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego). Why hasn't this ancient history, which repreatedly corroborates even the smallest details of the Bible, been better publicized? Even the temporary madness of Babylon's king Nebuchadnezzar is corroborated by secular history records. Dr. Cooper verifies, in his detail-documented analyses, archaeological data that are rarely (if ever) publicized. For example, recall the idolatrous golden statue reported in Daniel chapter 3, the statue that Daniel's 3 friends refused to bow down to? Scripture records the location as "Dura" (see Daniel 3:1), and Dr. Cooper provides historical verification of that place-name (Dura) which is remembered to this day by virtue of "the Dura Canal--Nahr Doura .. known by that name today, though you'd never learn that from the critics". Many examples of secular records are documented (such as various government records that name Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and/or Abednego), supporting the Bible's historicity. In his epilogue Dr. Cooper reminds the reader of the important fact that the Lord Jesus Christ verified Daniel as the historic prophet whom the Bible shows him to be -- thus reminding the reader that a conscious choice must be made about the authenticity of DANIEL: one must either side with Christ Himself, or side with those profane skeptics who claim that the book of DANIEL was a Maccabean era forgery, but one cannot stand on both sides of that fence. It is obvious that Dr. Bill Cooper is, quite wisely, on the side of the Lord Jesus. Once again, Dr. Cooper has provided the scholarly community with a real treasure!

Splendid Scholarship

Dr. Cooper smashes the critics again with his well researched book on Daniel. This book addresses the dating of the book and reveals evidences of Daniel and his three friends in the cuneiform record. The author pulls from archaeology, ancient writings, critics writings, and from the Bible to guide the reader to the irresistible conclusion that Daniel not only existed, but he wrote down everything exactly as it occured (or is to occur). Some of the tidbits that Cooper shares with the reader include (in an easy to read style) are about such things as how many dead persons were recorded as having died at the lion's den (guess whose name wasn't recorded - Daniel). Also, Abednego apparently worked for Nebuchadnezzar's son as an official secretary of sorts. This in itself is perhaps good evidence for how he (Evil-Merodach) happened to be influenced to release Jehoiachin, king of Judah, from prison and to grant him a stipend. The author provides additional evidence to reasonably conclude that Nebuchadnezzar may very well have trusted in the Lord God in his later days. In the end, this book sheds much light in dark places that critics have tried to keep in the dark (some of them knowing full well what they are doing). I recommend this book to one and all, but especially to the Bible believing Christian.

A fascinating book that brings together lots of historical evidence - and is not too long!

Dr. Bill Cooper's book is fascinating and excellent in many respects. It is one of a growing series, which also covers the books of Genesis, Esther, Jonah and the Gospels (so far). He is clearly a first-rate investigative historian, with a wide knowledge of ancient manuscripts, and he shows convincingly that the Book of Daniel is "entirely authentic and faithful to the historical record". Daniel was a real figure of history, who lived in the 6th century BC in Babylon and was an eye-witness to remarkable events as he served several kings of Babylon and finally Persia. This is verified by ancient documents, both directly and indirectly - quite a few being in the British Museum in London.

The Book of Daniel was first attacked head-on by Porphyry (3rd century AD), but since ~1850 so-called "higher critics" of the Bible have ridiculed it, mainly because of its remarkable prophecies foretelling events in detail that took place centuries later. The critics' assumption is that Daniel's book must be a fraud; but Dr. Cooper shows powerfully that it is their prejudiced assumption that flies in the face of all the historical evidence.

Dr. Cooper addresses and answers the lame, and sometimes ridiculous/out-of-date arguments of critics, such as about the languages contained in Daniel - even Pythagoras disproves them! But he also provides the varied positive evidence that attests to Daniel and his Hebrew friends, and the events they became caught up in. He shows persuasively that there are many small details given that any author writing centuries later could not possibly have known.

There is fascinating discussion about King Nebuchadnezzar's period of madness, why Daniel was thrown to the lions, and why Daniel and his friends probably played a part in the release of King Jehoiachin from prison, etc. In some cases we cannot be absolutely sure, but Dr. Cooper argues carefully based on all the evidence so far available.

I had read several much longer books about Daniel in the past, but found Dr. Cooper's added many fresh insights; it brought together the historical evidence and arguments for the authenticity of Daniel in a logical, comprehensible way. The book is only about 80 pages, but packs a huge amount in and is relatively easy to read. It includes a useful Appendix listing the relevant cuneiform tablets and other inscriptions, and a helpful Bibliography.

By showing that there is no good reason to doubt the authenticity of the Book of Daniel, Dr. Cooper intends to reassure those who are confused or discouraged by ill-founded 'modernist' attacks on the Bible. He also surely provides a lot of evidence that will be a challenge to any sincere critic willing to investigate the matter further. He asks why Bible critics withold or fail to address such a large amount of compelling evidence that attests to the authenticity of Daniel!

I have read Dr. Cooper's similar books on the authenticity of Jonah and Esther, and plan to read his books on Genesis and the gospels soon! I read his book "After the Flood" many years ago after hearing him speak at a conference - where I found his approach to history and the Bible gripping and inspiring. I highly recommend all of Bill Cooper's books!

This book does much more than simply telling you an entertaining (and amazingly true) story of how Soviet special forces and military intelligence worked back in 1970ties. It exposes the way the Soviet intelligence operatives thought, behaved and treated each other, and how this simply reflected the way the whole Soviet system treated people. The author doesn't say it, but having read the book, you'd understand why Soviet communism (and nowadays Putin's Russia) had never had and will never have a chance in competition with the West, simply because of the fundamentally different ways the two systems treat human beings. And that's a sobering and uplifting discovery...

A must read

This book is a true description of how the less known and more dangerous of the two biggest soviet spy agencies - the GRU - operated. They were well trained, highly effective, motivated and ruthless. I'm afraid they did much better during the Cold War than the West's intelligence agencies. And don't think GRU ceased to work in the Yeltsin Russia - these guys, maybe even some of the Suvorov's colleagues described in the book - are still out there, doing their job...
I would also recomend another book by the same author - "The Liberators" - describing in more detail his career in the soviet military before he joined the GRU.

Excellent description of how Soviet intelligence operates

The author, one of several brilliant Soviet military professionals who, learning the truth about the communist system, finally reached the point when they could not continue living "the old way" any more. They chose to defect, hurting the System but helping their Motherland, however paradoxical it may sound.
This book reads very well and captivates the reader. It offers valuable insights on the life and training of Soviet officers in armour, Spetznaz and GRU, which the author knows first-hand. It also shows how Soviet spies enlist Western citizens to sell their own countries' secrets. This book is well worth reading.

I was somewhat disappointed because I thought that the book that I purchased was updated, but when I received the book, it was published 2006. I needed the 2007 or the 2008 version of the book. I wasn't able to return it back anymore because it was too late.
