This brief and economical reader, edited by Jim Henslin, is specifically designed to be used as a companion to his "Sociology: A Down-to-Earth Approach" texts.

About the Author

James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books is Down-to-Earth Sociology : Introductory Readings (Free Press), now in its twelfth edition. This book of readings reflects some of these sociological interests. He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology.

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.”

Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Pretty good book with some interesting stories and perspectives.

I did not read every chapter in the book, but I did go through a lot of them for a class that I took, and it was a good enough book that I did not really mind reading it. I learned about different things, such as the training in the military and the life of a hit man, and also about the terrible situation in Thailand. In that country, there are around 35,000 girls who are enslaved in the sex trade, and there are probably about 500,000 to 1 million total prostitutes there. Sadly, the United Nations and others have well documented the terrible crimes that go on along with this practice (torture, rape, execution), but it seems that very little is being done to stop what is going on there.
I pray God frees those girls who are enslaved in Thailand and elsewhere, and that horrible practices such as this, murder, rape, domestic violence, persecution, racism, and abortion, no longer continue. We should all stand against these terrible crimes.

Standard sociology book. If I could give it a letter grade, it would probably be a D+. If your teacher is making you use this book, sorry but you're probably going to have a low educational value semester in general. - This goes along with the essentials of sociology book.

I'm reading this book for my sociology class. The introduction made me timid at first. They were using an large extensive vocabulary unknown to me. I had to look up a word every other sentence. I just finished the fallowing chapter, and really enjoyed it. I only had to look up a word once every page :)

I love this book. It is more advanced but that what I was looking for. I got the French version only on this one which is not a problem for me. I know that the previous one was in French and English. Beautiful book if you are looking for something sophisticated. Not for beginners.

Excellent characters, well-crafted story

Radical Equations is an excellent read: well-paced, finely written, and filled with enjoyable characters in a realistic small-town setting. Although it is the fourth mystery featuring high school math teacher Bonnie Pinkwater, readers new to the series (as I was) will not feel at a disadvantage, as the main action is independent of prior storylines.

Bonnie has the brains and irrepressible nosiness to be a good amateur sleuth, and whacky Wiccan BFF Rhiannon is an excellent sidekick. I also especially enjoyed Bonnie's scenes with former-student turned cop, Byron Hickman. The eastern Colorado setting is convincingly presented. The tornado scene early in the book is absolutely smashing (pun intended), and had me clicking "next page" as fast as I could read.

Bonnie's interactions with school district administrators and community oddballs ring true. It was fun to watch Bonnie struggle to keep her naturally sharp tongue and sense of humor from getting her fired. The plot is nicely tangled, and kept me guessing until the end.

I received a complimentary Kindle edition of this book in exchange for an unbiased review, and am eager to read the other books in this fun series.

I enjoyed Missus Pinkwater

Even though this is the fourth in a series that I'm unfamiliar with, I had no trouble jumping right in! I loved the small-town characters and cozy feel of this book. Bonnie Pinkwater, math teacher and amateur sleuth, was endearing and sometimes funny. She comes across as real person with only her human abilities, not a superhero ninja crimesolving savant. She's smart and compassionat--and a smart aleck :) I loved her attitude and I'll be catching up on the preceding books, and on the lookout for more adventures.

Kathy DeJoy-Genkos and Scott DeJoy are siblings who reside in Auburn, NY with their families. Their father, Frank DeJoy, was a Firefighter in the Auburn Fire Department with over 31 years of service at the time of his retirement in 1999. Scott followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Auburn Fire Department in 1994. He was an Assistant Chief at the time of his retirement in July of 2015, with over 20 years of service.

Great Case Studies

I'm currently in school for respiratory care and was looking for a book with good case studies on ABG's. The way this book is laid out is great. Each chapter has 2 case studies and then the last chapter is all case studies. Each case study aims to teach you something a little different to look out for in the clinical setting and the blood gases almost always relates to the rest of the chapter.

It's also an incredibly easy read. I'm not a big fan of just reading through a text book. In fact for most of my classes I never open my books, but I have found myself reading entire chapters and enjoying it.

This book wasn't required nor recommended for any of my classes, I just purchased it for my own benefit. That being said, I think this book is really beneficial for anyone looking to improve there critical thinking skills when it comes to blood gases.

Awesome book! I use this book very often. It was difficult for me to understand the basics from the beginning. However, when I read the step-by-step explanations in this book, I got it. I would advace this book to any student or practitioner.
