I can't believe I used to drink Diet Coke, count calories and eat fat-free processed crap (AKA kryptonite). Yet I was a good 20 pounds heavier, was always exhausted, had migraines and acne all the time, and in general felt like crap. Hard to believe! Of course docs prescribed meds for acne, migraines and depression, etc. When all I really needed was to chill out and JERF (just eat real food)! I wonder if I had treated myself with more self-care in my 20's would I have even gotten Hashimoto's thyroiditis? What would have happened if when I was diagnosed with Lyme, I had rested, taken probiotics and eat an anti-inflammatory super food diet instead of pushing through and trying to survive on caffeine and sugar during 6 months of antibiotics?! If I had only known then what I know now. Life is so much easier when you listen to your body, practice self-care and just chill out. This is why I wrote my book. To share what I learned on my healing journey. A warrior knows he can't protect or help anyone else unless he protects himself first. Ultimately my story is about self-care, balance and resilience. It's the delicate balance between willpower and chillpower (doing hard things vs doing easy things) to Find Our Flexible Warrior!

About the Author
Karen Dubs is a registered yoga teacher, a certified Pilates and Spinning instructor, a personal stretcher and a health coach specializing in flexibility, balance and recovery. She produced the Flexible Warrior Athletic Yoga DVD series with Spinervals and has taught yoga and stretching multiple seasons for The Baltimore Ravens football team and the University of Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team, in addition to private and group sessions for runners, triathletes, golfers, lacrosse and soccer players. Karen helped Olympic Pentathlete Suzanne Stettinius stay recovered and flexible while training for five sports leading up to the 2012 London Olympic games. Karen enjoys teaching fundraiser yoga classes for her favorite charity organizations, Believe Big, Knights of Heroes and Back On My Feet. She also loves teaching Flexibility for Warriors sessions at Charm City Run in Baltimore and doing private recovery, stretch and mash sessions with athletes of all levels and sports. Karen lives near Baltimore, Maryland with her husband, Jon, and their rescue pup Stella.

Karen offers smartly updated and highly effective solutions to our toughest obstacles. Not only in getting into shape physically, but mentally, spiritually and emotionally as well. As a combat Marine and yoga teacher, Flexible Warrior's content and specific methods can and will take us to the next level in each. Highly, highly recommended.

Listen to your body

Take care of yourself first! This information packed book reminds us that self care is crucial and must come first in this fast paced, over packed life. Self care can come in many shapes and sizes. The balance she refers to is more than mere physical balance; it is the physiological and emotional balance needed for overall health. Karen helps us all remember to slow down, eat real food, round out our exercise program and listen to our bodies. It's wholesome, nurturing advice. As a mom of 3 and a full time organic farmer I need all the reminders I can get to nurture myself and stay flexible, both physically and mentally.

I've Often Wondered If I Am "Normal" Since I Tend To Have A Lot of Self Doubt

I liked this book, although I got it in Kindle form. I was looking for something to check myself out as I have a lot of self doubt and am very sensitive. I strive to work on myself and I want to be the best "me" that I can be and present my best self to the world. This book helped me realize, by taking the tests, that I fall into a very satisfactory group, which boosted my self esteem and helped me understand myself a little more. There are a lot of books around this topic out there and I have read some. But this book zoomed in on test taking and felt more "results oriented", which was what I was looking for. It is easy to understand, easy to read, but there were a LOT of editing mistakes in the book, again, in its Kindle form. Some of the scoring was a little confounding, but all in all I was glad I bought this book to read. Do I have all of the answers to my secret self? NOOOOOOO!!! But at least I got confirmation that I handle myself in most cases in a way I should be proud of, and because I was going through some things, I just needed a "tune up" and this book addressed my needs pretty well.

Yet, having grown out of the 2007 2009 financial crisis, they are still an 'infant' reform instrument in many respects. Few of the instrument's design features (or even the rating, regulatory, and tax treatments) are entirely settled. This book seeks to move the discussion toward, and then past, the main decision points so that CoCos can prove their value for contingency planning and self-insurance all over the world. It is intended to increase the ability of issuers and investors to analyze and understand the different kinds of CoCos.

About the Author
Since entering the doctoral program at Princeton University as an International Finance Fellow, and inspired by Burt Malkiel and Ed Kane, George von Furstenberg has been fascinated with macro and micro aspects of finance. Throughout his career, work at US government agencies such as the President's Council of Economic Advisers (Senior Economist, 1973 76) and the Department of State (1989 90), at the IMF Research Department (Division Chief, 1978 83), and at the National Science Foundation (Rotating Program Director Economics, 2006 08) has alternated with his academic pursuits. A titled Professor of Economics at Indiana University, emeritus as of 2006, he is a member of the Toronto-based G8 Research Group, a past president (2000) of the North American Economics and Finance Association, and a participant in meetings of the Asian Economic Policy Panel. He has been listed in Who's Who in the World since 2006.

Work in his principal fields has been supplemented by continuing analyses of US economic and financial policies in several areas. These include regional trade agreements, housing and mortgage credit, and capital insurance for financial institutions as well as evaluations of US policy responses during the depth of the 2007 2009 financial crisis.

His current work on efficient design of Contingent Convertible Debt Securities (CoCos) and on Contingent Capital as a reform instrument to strengthen the private safety net through self-insurance of financial institutions has benefitted from visiting research fellowships in the Research Centre of the Deutsche Bundesbank (2010), the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary Research (2011), and the Risk Management Institute of the National University of Singapore (2011)

A pragmatic case for CoCos

Excellent book explaining why CoCos can be and should be a relevant financial instrument to alleviate deterioration in a bank’s balance sheet.

This book counter balances economic concepts which are oftentimes far removed from the reality of a bank’s operations and everyday decision-making experience. The pragmatic examples outlined in this book favorably contrast other books like The Bankers' New Clothes by Anat Admati & Martin Hellwig where the authors lay out very few foundations to support the “equity claim.”

Prof. Von Furstenberg central premise is that a simple measure -- banks voluntarily raising capital through CoCos and reshaping their capital structure -- issuing bonds that can be converted to equity -- would greatly improve the stability of the issuing bank, improve corporate governance, enhance market discipline in the banking system, and would greatly reduce bailout costs. Prof. Von Furstenberg slices through the various issues, catalogs and presents a credible and clear view of an instrument still in its infancy. As a result, he addresses a number of CoCos’ issues and features central to developing this product--policies or the lack thereof, tax treatment, rating agencies roles --risk premium, conversion price and replacement rate, recovery rate.

In this challenge, the discussion around going-concern recovery sets the tone for a serious conversation about the need for such product. The simplicity in which the various ratios and calculations are presented makes for a pragmatic and relevant case.
As a pragmatic example, I particularly enjoyed chapter 8 subsection 8.1 around the restructuring of SolarWorld and the theoretical demonstration of the need for such product not only for banks but for corporations. As an experienced restructuring banker, I appreciate the impact of the hypothetical CoCo issued and the estimated cash savings from interest payments, cash being key in such situations.

While no single measure proposal can resolve every problem that might arise in the financial sector, CoCos appear as a necessary threshold that must be addressed.

From a banker’s perspective (having consulted as well for 5 years on the European financial crisis), I found Prof. Von Furstenberg message to be quite persuasive and compelling.

A Valuable Book

For anyone who wants to understand contingent equity, this book is full of valuable insights, useful facts, and careful distinctions. It begins with an encyclopedic treatment of differences in the evolving levels and composition of capital (i.e., equity) requirements in the US and EU. Cocos are described as creative instruments that in Europe authorities have allowed to lower some of the tax and regulatory burdens associated with providing loss-absorbing private equity funding to banks when it is desperately needed.
The use of the word “potent” in his subtitle immediately tells us that Professor von Furstenberg hopes that his book can help overcome the reluctance of US tax and regulatory authorities to follow the Europeans’ lead. He builds a case for cocos as a way to temper the costs of Too-Big-to-Fail policies for taxpayers. In his view, the expected reduction in bailout costs would make it worthwhile to “bend” regulatory definitions of capital and tax-code restrictions on deductibility of interest, at least on instruments that are actuated automatically and set to convert long before the point of potential insolvency. In view of the difficulty of credibly estimating the side effects and after-effects of alternative policies, he does not attempt any quantitative balancing of the opportunity costs involved.
The book has immense value as a reference, which is how I will use it. It catalogues --and shows how to price-- a range of differences in contractual features and explains how particular variations in contract terms might improve corporate governance and enhance market discipline. It reviews real-world use and misuse of cocos at banks that have actually issued them. Finally, the last 90 pages of the book work through a series of major policy issues and offer well-chosen excerpts from key statements on cocos developed by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and US and European authorities.

Every single woman needs this book

I adored this book!!! I've been "trying" to meet someone via online dating (various sites) for some time, and the scene is better for its entertainment value than for actually meeting guys you'd want to hang out with! (Pls. note that I'm an older single, widowed, and the mature ones really don't change...still want you to think they're real studs, even when they can't perform at all. Instead they'll try to regale you with stories of their "glory days", which grosses me out. Like--I really want to hear "locker room talk" from some jerk in his 60's?)

Long term relationship (LTR)? Why sure...About 90% of the profiles indicate they want to meet that Special Someone to spend the rest of their lives with. Don't necessarily take it seriously. I'm beginning to think that some of these guys' definition of a long term relationship is a 3-day weekend.

Never mind the con-men and scammers...that's another book!

A kinda think the ones in my age group are looking to supplement their social security payments--many seem perfectly happy to move in with a woman, just don't bring up the commitment thing. I'm starting to suspect my Mr. Right is sitting in a nursing home somewhere, and doesn't have Internet access.

My late husband was a great guy--warm, affectionate smart and funny! I guess I'm spoiled. But, no matter who you are, or what your age might be, it's still better to be alone than bogged down in a miserable relationship, with someone who doesn't love or respect you, or worse, is in any way abusive. Online dating is one way to meet people--it just might not be the best way. There are lots of dishonest and dysfunctional people online, so be aware and stay safe.

An easy read for those who need dating advice and those who just want a peek inside the life of a single girl in NYC

As a lover of books, the first thing I noticed was the magnificent way this book was produced. The cover and insides were beautiful and unique. I loved the photo collages of Lauren! I was also initially intrigued by the description of this book. As a Midwestern mom and wife, I was looking forward to living the NYC single girl dating life through Lauren. While this book wasn't exactly what I anticipated (I thought there would be more stories), it was entertaining. Lauren shares many of her own dating tragedies as well as those of other daters. She also shares insight and tips on how to get the most out of your online dating experience. This book is a nice, light read with short chapters perfect to keep those who aren't dating engaged with the stories and keep those who are dating hooked with all of the tips and suggestions on how to avoid bad matches. I look forward to hearing ,ore from Lauren in the future.

I was hoping for insights into the online dating world. What I found instead was an admission by the author that she wasn't really sure why she became the most popular girl on OKCupid. Much of it was what I felt was an immature rant and report of various crazy events with men she met or dated. So not worth it.

It is easy to take issue with an effort to provide a neutral perspective on the conflict. Partisans will inevitably view such projects as biased. I thought that Caplan made an admirable effort to present a clear, concise and impartial look at the historical controversies relating to the conflict.

Caplan is biased. Does not present a fair approach to history

I was excited to read this book, at first. However, the more I read the more I realized that Caplan neglected to include all information about the Israeli side of things. I think he may have did this so that his book seems balanced but not telling the entire story is unfair. I do not recommend this book for someone who is looking to a get a fair and balanced approach to the history the Middle East conflict. Instead I would recommend one of two reads: Mitchell Bard's "Idiot's Guide to the Middle East Conflict" or Michael Rydelniks "Understanding the Arab-Israeli Conflict: What the Headlines Haven't Told You".

Norwegian flags hanging on a American tree do more than commemorate the Old Land; they were first used on Norwegian trees as the country gained independence.

Well into the nineteenth century, rural Norwegians feared the terrible oskorei, spirits who stole horses and kidnapped people who did not have special protection on Christmas Eve.

The nisse, the benevolent farm spirit, was given a bowl of porridge at Christmas time to thank him for his protection during preceding year and to ensure its continuation in the year to come.

In medieval times, Norwegian peasants were required to brew beer at Christmas time on pain of a fine or confiscation of property.

Great traditions for families who have members who have passed on to get to know cultural traditions that are heart warming and sustainable. So if you are wanting to build family memories that will last and be remembered by all this is a great buy!

Not just for Norwegian-Americans

This book is a valuable addition to the collection of anyone who enjoys reading about Christmas traditions.

Stoker traces the Roman and Viking roots to Christmas celebrations in Norway and their evolution among Norwegian-Americans. She emphasizes the importance of preserving ethnic heritage: "Americans find in ethnicity an antidote to the isolation that has grown increasingly acute in the wake of the massive suburbanization that began in the 1940's.... Ethnicity fulfills the particularly American need for origins and belonging..."

Christmas is an ideal time to reconnect with one's cultural roots. As Stokker writes: "Incorporating change while retaining everything that makes it so beloved, Christmas holds within its vast and monumental embrace diverse individuals, families and cultures, allowing each a means of self-expression."

The "authenticity" of ethnic celebrations, however, is open to interpretation. Stokker writes: "When people no longer fear that their ethnicity may threaten their life chances, they can express it more freely. With greater time separating them from the Old Country, they can also feel less constraint about the way they choose to express their attachment to it. As a result, individuals and families increasingly create the content of their ethnicity, picking and choosing the items that they themselves find meaningful...."

This book is a great read and worth the trouble of finding a used copy. (Or buy a brand new copy from Barnes & Noble)

Amazing resource!

This book goes very in-depth into details about Norwegian traditions, and also quite a bit into the myths and creatures surrounding them. There are recipes in there as well and tid-bits about how rural life was and what they ate and even how they prepared it. This book is fascinating and a good resource for anyone interested in Norwegian myth and traditions in general.
