The core ruleset for Fantasy Flight's Star Wars RPG is fantastic. The dice system is dynamic. It simultaneously adjudicates simple tasks and tells a story. The integration of this system into the classes, and rules is seamless. There are so many options, it is dizzying, but easy to understand.

There are 3 core books, this being the 3rd. This long awaited volume contains everything you need to create and play jedi, and force users. Like its predecessors, it is simple, and utilizes the base dice mechanic. This is also my singular complaint.

As beautiful as these books are, they retread too much material. The rules have not changed since the original core book Edge of the Empire. So why include all combat rules, encumbrance, basic equipment, etc.? Rather than include all the same material for a 3rd time, why not just include the material that is new? There are lots of new classes, races, planetary background, npc listings, some new equipment, feats, etc. There is more than enough new material to justify its own book, without charging full price for a core book.

I love the system, and this gives us the heart of Star Wars: the Force. There is still a lot of new material, and you could run a game with nothing but this book. The quality of the paper, binding, and artwork, is fantastic. I recommend the book, with the knowledge that you are buying a some of the same information all over again.

A solid, narrative system, that's easy to use once you get passed the goofy custom dice, and fun to play.
The classes / specialization really do cover almost every reasonably imaginable force user concept... And do it well.
Powerful yet balanced, more so than previous versions of the Star Wars RPG (mainly because you're not playing temple Jedi, you're playing force users doing their best to self teach through old Holocrons and the rare Jedi mentor of those

When Brenda Laurel first wrote this book in the early '80s, it may have seemed a bit far-fetched to most computer users: "What? How can my interaction with a computer have anything to do with theatre? I'm typing!" But with the emergence of WebTV, VRML, and the dawning of real online interactivity where our interface with the computer and others is not the keyboard, but instead our imagination and the suspension of disbelief it requires, Laurel's ideas are finally coming of age. Snotty digerati might sniff that this is an old book, but I would argue that it is a book that has finally come of age.

Made me think about things I never would have thought about

Computers as Theatre, Second Edition is an update to a 20-year-old classic in the field of human-computer interaction. The author, Brenda Laurel, is an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science and Affiliated Faculty for Games and Playable Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In addition to her academic credentials, which include a PhD in theatre, she also has serious real-world experience with previous employers like Atari, Activision, and Apple.

The book is based on the simple premise that effective interface design, just like effective drama, must engage the user directly in an experience involving both thought and action. Laurel's key point is that a user's enjoyment must be a paramount design consideration, and she posits that it demands a deep awareness of dramatic theory and technique. While I might shrink back from the idea that this awareness is an absolute requirement, I will quickly and easily concede that this awareness would be extremely useful.

This is not a book of practical tips and tricks. It is a reader-accessible study that lays out the philosophical and academic foundations for understanding first how humans audience members interact with drama and uses that as a basis for thinking about how computer users can more effectively be enabled to interact with computers.

The beginning of Computers as Theatre focuses on both classical and modern schools of thought and theory about drama. This is very interesting and outside of my previous experience. It got me thinking about things I had never considered. I like that.

The rest of the book takes this knowledge and applies it to computers. It does so in ways that alternately seem obvious and revolutionary. I will illustrate using one small portion of the book's content.

In drama, the action is represented as a whole and created by the playwright and director to be the same in every performance. In human-computer interaction, the action is collaboratively shaped by both the designer and the person using the computer; it is a joint-venture and may change with each interactive session. And yet, in both instances, there is an expected beginning, middle, and end. The audience expects to move from a beginning point to an end point with a purpose. The characters in a drama exist and act to move this plot forward. So do the elements of a computer interface design.

Have you have ever sat at a computer looking at a piece of software and wondering "What's the point?" Then you have experienced a bad interface design. Learning how to create an interface that has an obvious point and reason behind each of its constituent parts and actions is one of the things this book intends to teach, but again, from a philosophical rather than practical standpoint. Here we do not learn the "what to do" answers so much as the questions to ask. In the long term, this is usually more valuable regardless of the topic or field.

Good ideas, but I felt the book lacked a clear focus.

I finished reading "Computers as Theater" by Brenda Laural yesterday. The book has many good ideas in it, and it may well be worth reading just to pick these up.
It is also one of those books which does not do a good job of unifying its material, in my opinion. Rather than being a progression of ideas that builds to some intellectual climax, it meanders through various interesting points not quite aimlessly. The book introduces two useful diagrams: 'flying wedges' which describe how the space of possibilities in a drama go from the 'possible' to converge on the 'necessary', and 'freytag triangles', which measures the rise and fall of a plot. If these are used to describe this book (a slight abuse?), it doesn't fare well. The freytag diagram never peaks, and the wedge doesn't converge to the 'necessary'. This may be because the objectives for the book were not clear. As a reader, I didn't realize she was not (mostly) speaking to the modern commercial software world for quite a while into the book. The book also ended with two chapters about virtual reality (the substance, not the hype), and I was left wondering if perhaps *this* was what the book was really about (if so, I didn't see it coming).
All that said: there are many good ideas in the book, some of which will make you stop and think for a while (e.g. those diagrams). It is valuable because of this. As an individual, I simply wish the book had been better structured, for I'd have gotten more out of it.

Brent Stewart, M.D., M.B.A. was born and raised in Arkansas. He attended Arkansas State University where he received an undergraduate degree in zoology. He then obtained his medical doctorate degree from the University of Arkansas and served a 4 year anesthesiology training residency at the University of South Florida. Later, he earned a masters degree in business administration from the University of Florida. Dr. Stewart became board certified as an anesthesiologist in 2007, and maintains an anesthesiology practice in Tampa, Florida.

Don't be afraid!

You scheduled your appointment for surgery and no one is available that really knows the ins and outs of going under the knife. Here is a hands on manual that is easy to understand as a patient. No one, at least that I know of, likes surgery as there are so many unknown factors to deal with that can be very scary! This doctor's gift is to put you at ease and "take the edge off" before you even talk to your physician before your own procedure. I believe this book should be considered a must read for any patient before surgery.

excellent resource

As an anesthesiologist, I would recommend this book to all of my patients having surgery. It is an excellent resource for patients and families who have questions or concerns about upcoming procedures and the associated anesthetic. Dr. Stewart does a brilliant job of explaining the different types of anesthesia as well as explaining a variety of surgical procedures. The book can easily be understood by people not acquainted with medical terminology. As anesthesiologists, we rarely have an opportunity to meet our patients until moments before their surgery. This book helps understand what we do, which in turn may help allay the fear and anxiety associated with surgery and anesthesia.

Hate to piggy-back a review, but Ahmad's review got it right...

I can't add much more than what Ahmad said in his review. This book was not very insightful about Dr. Dre beyond what many of us have heard or read through the years. This book felt like one long article from Vibe or The Source. Although it was all chronological and brought together the information in a clear format, it still felt like very "surface" information. Some of the best info revolved around the transition from N.W.A. to trying to complete/distribute the Chronic.

I would recommend the book for a Dre fan. For someone looking for a good hip hop bio/auto-bio I would recommend Jermaine Dupri's book which has a lot more in depth info regarding J.D. and the things that happened to get him where he is today. Its not totally fair to compare a biography with an autobiography, so this Dre book did what it could given what I'm sure was available to work with.

Everything you wanted to know about Dre (Sort of)

This Biography reads well at times, at other times the author stumbles between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd persons. With single line, dry and sometimes non emotional quotes this book reads more like a magazine article than an in depth biography. Entertaining yes it is, but the book leaves a lot to be desired. I would have loved to have read excerpts before purchasing this book, as word flow and continuity are paramount to my expectations of any books in my library. I probably wouldn't have bought this book had I had the opportunity to sample the authors writing style.
