The One and Only Standard

During his lifetime Antonio Stradivari made approximately 1,100 instruments, primarily violins. Herbert Goodkind photographed 700 of those, the rest presumed lost to history. Each instrument is photographed front, back, and profile. Some also have detail photos of the scroll and f-holes. Interestingly included are a few guitars which the master made.
The photograph section is preceded by a short history of Stradivari and his instuments in history. These essays reveal the historical discourse on violins and give perspective to the modern violin historian. It is amazing to me that such a work was ever undertaken to begin with and stunning that it was actually completed. It is a 780 page tome with a copyright of 1972 complete with long abandoned paper quality, even for its time a rarity, and beautifully embossed cover sheets front and back. An amazing piece of work and the world standard.

Being a native of Idaho, Curtis has always been close to wild game, good fishing, and high mountains. He traveled extensively throughout the world while serving in the Marines and later in life as a tourist, during his working years and after retirement. In each country he visited, his interest in the country s cultures and traditions were of the upmost importance. For many years, he has worked closely with the Idaho Fish and Game protecting and establishing wildlife habitat, and has given numerous presentations concerning best management practices of rivers and reservoirs. Alaska has always sparked his interest, especially during the period of time just after the initial purchase from Russia. Having traveled broadly in Alaska and being inquisitive about the ancient traditions of the Eskimo people, Curtis was driven to write about the opening of the new frontier.

Kincaid and the furious white

The author must be new to the game as I do not recognize him but I'm sure that he will be recognized in the future as the book is riveting. I would normally call it a "page turner" but since I've read it via Kindle, I must call it a "button pusher". The author seems to know much about life in Alaska a century ago, and aware of the various inconveniences of the time. However, the real reward in reading this book is the story with many twists and turns. A very good plot. I say this even though I'm quite reticent to read the average novel. My preference is history and the reader of this book gets his fill of historical items. Overall a five star rating.

Alexandra Manukyan was born and raised in Armenia, and since a very young age has been interested in fine arts and spent many years stydyng painting, drawing and sculpture. She graduated art school, college, and State Pedagogical University as an art major in Armenia. After immigrating to the States, she continued her education and majored in Fashion and Graphic design. Since 1990 Alexandra worked in Fashion and Entertainment industries as a designer and graphic artist. In Fashion industry she created screen print art, textile print designs and fashion editorials and worked for the companies such as: Susan Borrows (1991-1994), Bill Glazer and Associates Inc. (1994-1997), CC Collection Inc. (1997-1998), Fashion Life Inc. (1998 to present). From 2002 to 2006 she freelanced for the Entertainment Industry. I designed and illustrated movie posters and worked with companies such as BLT and Associates, Shoolery design, Bird design, Big Picture Group Advertising, 1124 Design Inc. etc. “I focus on combining traditional oil painting techniques with surrealist symbolism to communicate the immediate and lasting impact of technological innovations on the human body and psyche.“ ~ Alexandra Manukyan --------------------------------------- Marcin Migdal was born and raised in Poland. Quite innovative little book

I fell in love with Alexandra's work ever since I saw her show. I previewed the book online first and my gf bought it for me as a surprise gift recently. As I'm part of a surrealist group I was quite excited to see the book at hand and recommend it to anyone who is interested in oil painting or seeing some fun videos from the book. The book is quite substantial in pages and the right size for being an education book that's easy to carry, but it's a little small for a collection of her works in my opinion. I think it should of been 12x12 high gloss with hard cover or something like that. The gloss cover felt really high quality, once i opened the book there are flat matte pages in full color and it gets really innovative with the QR Codes, its pretty cool scanning her video teasers, it's too bad that you only see the first few minutes of her workshop though, but I've not seen this type of interaction in a book before. The book is layed out very nicely and the reference and tips are very educational. The book is perfect bound and It seems more as an informative education book on how to oil paint and what Alexandra is thinking with her paintings instead of a straight collection. It's still better than paying $500 for her prints though. I've had the book for a week and showed it around a few times, but i hadn't noticed the issues with the binding or pages falling out.

Falling Apart

Four stars for Manukyan's work, one star for printing/binding quality. I waited in great anticipation for this book but was so disappointed at the book size, quality of printing and binding. Honestly, I have never returned anything to Amazon before--this was a first. I'm always careful not to break the bindings on my books, but the pages started to literally fall out as I first opened the book. The picture printing was such a poor representation of Manukyan's work that I truly couldn't stand to look. They were grainy, flat, dingy, and unclear. The cover was flimsy and wouldn't lay flat. It's too bad she is represented this way because her work is imaginative and fresh, and deserves better. As it stands, this art book is unreadable.

Highly Recommended

I have followed April Henry's novels since the first charming title, "Circles of Confusion." She has developed considerable polish and professionalism over her many writing outputs. I thoroughly enjoyed this title. The subject matter was common enough--serial killing of young women--but the novel was unique in several ways. The characters are primarily teens who participate in the Search and Rescue teams serving the greater Portland area. Each of the teens portrayed is facing her or his own problems, and these are presented with understanding and compassion. They approach their challenges proactively and with some insight to their own motivations and drives. The novel also guides us to challenge our own prejudices about homeless people and the difficulties they face subsisting in an urban environment. I found the book easy to read and understand but not simple in its subject matter or execution. I recommend it highly.

I always like a mystery where one learns a new aspect of police work and in this case the story involves teens assisting in doing some of the legwork for Portland, Oregon police after during a training session for young volunteers, two teens stumble on a the body of a young woman. Step by step you experience what a group of three teens,a boy and two girls, go through helping in the investigation.
