For the past 150 years, she says, some people have seen evidence in nature of God's mind, while others adhere to the Darwinian tenet that nature as we know it has arisen by chance, random mutation. Begley herself infers a sacredness in nature even apart from any consideration of God. The book-largely images-leaves the reader to decide. Outstanding Visuals and Inspiring Quotes

Upon seeing the title and cover of this book, I picked it up from the bookstore. It is lovely eye-candy! It has a colorful picture of a human brain on the front cover. Always curious as to what is in the mind of God, it was a have-to-have it book.

It combines for the most part beautiful images (and some stunningly beautiful) of the inner body processes blown up to mega-size and, in some cases, resembling a kind of impressionistic art. Even cancer cells have a certain beauty blown up many times their actual size.

Among the many images, with carefully chosen quotations that match each picture so well, are adrenaline crystals; synaptic connections between neurons (brain cells), the flu virus, normal white blood cells, and so much more!

What this kind of compilation does is to bring home the resounding truth that we are a living universe---each of us. We are not so different than the grand Hubble shots of deep space that have become so sought after. While we metaphysicians "knew" this truth intuitively, it is now verifiable by photography. It is a bit like when aura photography came into vogue and made the electromagnetic field accessible visually to the masses.

This is a book of inspiration, and it succeeds grandly in its intent. I highly recommend it to those of you who can be fascinated by your inner workings and inspired by the wonderful quotes which accompany each picture.

Even the poorest should help those less fortunate, as is shown in As Big as an Egg: A story about giving: Set in the then Soviet Union during World War II, it tell of Chaim's efforts to avoid sharing his bit of bread with the sick who are unable to stand in bread lines. A magical something in his house nibbles nightly at his hoarded bread until he begins, once again, to earn Bubba Hinda's blessing, "Zol zein tzu mitzvah," by giving to others. Also out to teach a lesson, this book, at least, makes it fun.

G-d's messengers take mysterious forms. The story takes place in Russia during World War II when food was scarce. After standing on a long line following a hard day of work to obtain his ration of bread, Chaim is stopped by Bubbe Hinda who is collecting donations of bits of bread for poor people. Chaim breaks off a piece of bread as big as an egg and drops it into the sack. Unwilling to contribute again, he avoids Bubbe Hinda and keeps the whole loaf of bread, securing it after dinner and covering all the mouse holds to protect it from mice. But for three mornings he finds a piece missing as big as an egg and spies a mouse's tail disappearing. Finally, he understands and donates thereafter, as big as two eggs, after which the mouse runs out of the house and his bread is no longer robbed. This is an appealing well-told story that reads like a folk tale although it is based on a true story. It has two child-pleasing repetitive refrains: a Yiddish blessing and the as big as an egg, and well composed, drawn and painted evocative illustrations.

About the Author
Books and writing have always been an enormous part of Anita's life. She survived school by hiding out in the library, with several thousand fictional characters for company. At university, she overcame the boredom of studying accountancy by squeezing in Egyptology papers and learning to read hieroglyphics. Today, Anita writes twisted historical novels with heart. Anita has done it again, and sadly, for the last time, at least when it comes to the deliciously sexy and devilishly fun Artifact Hunter series. This book provided some necessary closure to a few long-standing storylines, in addition to leave a few tidbits and hints for future events... which are great in case she ever decides to pick back up and write more in this awesome steampunk fantasy series.

Cara and Nate are in a pickle... a frozen pickle. London is in a deep freeze, a cold snap the likes of which no where in the world that usually has changing seasons has ever seen. Even the Thames is completely iced over. People are losing their livelihoods, or worse, their lives, as the never-ending winter takes its toll. Cara and Nate try hard to get at the root of the problem, and along the way, find old issues with their respective nemeses, the Curator and Inspector Hamish Fraser, coming to a head. Can the two use their mystical, physical, spiritual, and loving bond, along with their family of blood relatives, more-friends-than-employees, and even a dragon to get to the bottom of their woes and save London from reaching the frozen point of no return?

Anita has set up some awesome storylines that lead to this book... Fraser's loss of his love and desire for vengeance, the Curator's obsession with Cara, Cara's family history... and she ties everything together masterfully.

This series was my first ever steampunk series, and I've come to love it. I'm sad it's over (maybe just for now???), but look forward to reading anything else that pours out of Anita's fantastical and deliciously dirty mind.

Excellent new addition to the series!

Moseh's Staff is the fourth book of the Artifact Hunter's series. Those of you who've been following my blog have probably already read my reviews of the first three books: Nefertiti's Heart, Hatshepsut's Collar, and Nero's Fiddle. In my last review, I expressed that I had a problem writing a review for the third book, because I didn't like it as much as the first two.

I so did not have that problem with this volume.

Moseh's Staff had the same page gripping intensity I experienced with Nefertiti's Heart - in fact, I'd almost say it's my new favorite installment in the series. The story is incredibly compelling and as the events unfold, you will literally find yourself on the edge of your seat, flipping the pages feverishly because you just have to know if everything turns out alright at the end. Sure, you might be able to predict what's coming next (I totally called two of the plot twists), and might suspect that everything will turn out just fine (not telling!), but there's that gut-gripping sensation while you're inside Nate's head that has you panicking that you might be wrong, especially when you consider the (inconceivably) popular practice of killing off main characters these days (again, I'm not telling!).

Would I recommend it? Oh my gosh, YES! As always, you ought to pick up the rest of the books in the series, otherwise you might be a little lost about, well, a lot of events. This series, and this book, has a great meld of features that could appeal to a wide audience: romance, mystery, steampunk, a little fantasy - you name it.

Disclaimer: There are the usual steamy scenes you find in a romance here. Also, purists of any type of genre might take offense at the author's blurred lines approach - I find it very refreshing and fun to have a book with steampunk, Regency romance, fantasy, mystery, and horror elements all tied up in one neat package. Although, the horror element in this one wasn't the grisly, gory type from previous books. Instead, it's from Cara's nightmares - nightmares of when she was raped at fourteen. It doesn't go into explicit detail, but buyer beware.

MOSEH’S STAFF is the fourth book in A.W. Exley’s Artifact Hunters series. In the past, I’ve described the series as quirky and unique. A good blend of historical fiction, fantasy, romance, adventure, mythology, and steampunk. These descriptions hold true with MOSEH’S STAFF, which is sadly the last book in the series. I’m sad to see the end of Cara and Nate, but I do like how the author finished everything.

As Queen Victoria’s artifact hunters, Nate and Cara must figure out what artifact is causing endless winter and misery in London. It’s April, but the Thames is frozen. London is the only area affected, and Victoria’s not very happy about it. Cara and Nate have a good idea of who is behind events — the Curator — but how to stop him is a different question. How do you stop a man who bleeds water instead of blood?

The hunt becomes even more personal when the Curator reveals his intentions to take Cara as his own, severing the bond of Nefertiti’s Heart that connects her and Nate. I love Cara and Nate together, but it was great to see Nate on his own as well. The author showed more of Nate’s darker side, the no holds barred man he was before Cara’s presence in his life. Nate’s the guy I’d want on my side if someone took me, because he stops at nothing to rescue Cara.

There’s a lot of revelations in MOSEH’S STAFF, tying up loose ends from previous books in the series, such as explaining why Cara and Nate fit so perfectly together, or bringing back the dragon from HATSHEPSUT’S COLLAR. Many of Cara and Nate’s friends show up in MOSEH’S STAFF (minus Loki, sadface), rallying around Nate to help find Cara. And Cara, kick butt woman that she is, isn’t content to sit back and be rescued. She confronts her own demons in MOSEH’S STAFF while trying to figure out which artifact powers the Curator.

All in all, MOSEH’S STAFF is a satisfying conclusion to the Artifact Hunters series, full of what I loved about the previous books: Cara and Nate, twists on mythology, humor in dark moments, and lots of action.

BEST BOOK EVER

This is the best book I've ever read in my LIFE! I was so tuned in from every aspect of being railroaded by the same agents, with twenty co-defendants,having a a slew of chicks and, having my run in the streets of Philly the only differences was I was a female...now I wasn't doing the same numbers but I was aight(lol).I wasn't afraid of nothing but the flip side is to know better now, to see somebody go through it after me fifteen years later it blows my mind and when we're in a situation we can't see it as clear as we can once the wind blows...I wish I had the opportunity to stop our youth from falling into my shoes. It's a different time, different era and things are changing for the worst, I'm just glad that ACE CAPONE has gone HARD enough to show them this isn't the way you want your life to end. I support him and I think his writing skills are amazing.

Realest I read in a while

Ace has delivered us one of the truest and livest images and tales of the streets. With such raw and uncut visuals you have no choice but to feel the emotion and struggles that came along with the gifts and the glamour. To me this book is challenging the minds of our youth who think from a distance this is what they want out of life. All I can say is if you got a girlfriend, daughter,niece,cousin or neighbor who seeks these dope boys you need to give them a copy of this book "Go HARD" If you have a nephew, son, or little cousin who is spiraling out of control into the wretched cold streets you need to get him a copy of this book. IT'S real and before it's too late...before they start going HARD in a road that nobody's ever really prepared for you have to at least know you've tried and this is the best way, to get your message across in my opinion. It's I think a key to life that everyone should have the opportunity of experiencing. READ it yourself if you don't believe me.

The Gettin' Got Too Good!....

This was an ok story that I found a bit contradictory and repetitive with strange punctuation marks. The message the writer was trying to convey sort of got lost as well as the timeline. These few points I mentioned could only let me give this 3 stars and have me leery about reading this writer's next project.

Dr. Puram's book "Stories from Srimad Bhagavatam" (SSB) contains stories from the Hindu holy scripture Srimad Bhagavatam. It is intended for those in the western world and the English speaking of India. The book has 52 chapters including three chapters of introduction. It is largely based on an authentic eight volume translation and commentary in Malayalam by Pandit Gopalan Nair. The original book Srimad Bhagavatam (S.B.) is one of the greatest of the Hindu scriptures and contains 18,000 verses in Sanskrit. The multitude of stories, narration style, vast number of characters and the complex relationship between characters make the reading difficult for a person unfamiliar with the background stories. In the original book (S.B.) stories pertaining to a character are often narrated in several different places making the comprehension of the book more difficult. The reading becomes more tedious because of the infusion of several verses or even chapters of philosophy and esoteric ideas within a story. The stories in this ancient scripture are so beautiful that they should not remain unknown to the vast majority. There has been several English translations and condensations of the book. Due to complexities, the translations normally will be read only by a serious reader and is not suited for the general reading population. The narration style of the condensations follow the same story telling style of the original and therefore can be challenging to some readers. Dr. Puram’s book (SSB) makes a deviation from the condensations that have been published so far. The first three chapters of SSB contain an introduction to Hinduism, the story of Mahabharata and a summary of Srimd Bhagavatam. These three chapters provide a good introduction to readers unfamiliar with Hinduism and its epics. In each subsequent chapter one story of Srimad Bhagavatam is narrated without interjecting philosophical and esoteric discussions in the story. The narration in SSB assumes no knowledge or familiarity with stories from Hindu scriptures. Whenever characters appear in stories their relationships with characters who have already appeared in earlier stories are explained. Charts have been drawn to help the reader to understand the relationships between characters. The spirit of the stories cannot be conveyed without the use of Sanskrit words and for this reason the meanings of the words are explained as they appear. For completeness, in certain chapters interesting details from Mahabharatam and Ramayanam have been incorporated in the text. In some instances stories from other sources pertaining to the subject matter of a chapter are also included. Such stories are presented in a section called End Notes. This section may also contain pertinent esoteric comments or discussions. The book may be read without loss continuity even by skipping the End Section. The author narrates stories in a style that appeals to the young and old alike. He follows a simplified story telling style without the dialogs and esoteric discussions that appear in many of the Hindu epics and puranas.

About the Author
Chith Puram has a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering and has worked for the Indian Space Research Organization, NASA Langley Research Center and several private organizations. He has also worked for several departments of the Federal Government in various capacities. Dr. Puram has conducted several story telling sessions at the Sri Meenakshi Temple, Houston, Texas. The present book is a compilation of the stories Dr. Puram had narrated from the first nine cantos of Srimad Bhagavatam. He narrates stories from Srimad Bhagavatam in a style that appeals to the young and old alike. Tonal shift games with thrones by a talented team.

It's weird that about after 4 decades of being ahead of the curve on so many things to find Jodorowsky doing something that could be considered derivative. I guess after years of being highly influential that it's ok for him to just decide to show other people he can do what they do better. In this case, it's his version of Game of Thrones. Only, it's a bit harsher and a bit crazier. Normal human behavior is even less apparent here than in anything by George RR Martin and whatever team of writers the show employs. However, it still feels more believable than the nuttiness on display in Game of Thrones.

The basic plot is about a king who gets a curse placed on him after having what can only be described as a particularly awful day. That might sound a bit flippant but I'm trying not to give anything away. It's an interesting story really it is. Even by the standards of Jodorwosky...these are some conflicted people. It's explained in story to a certain extent. The main thrust and theme being the nastiness of fate/destiny in the most Greek sense of it. Again, not new stuff but it's well executed even if ultimately it's not particularly deep and has a certain crass heavy handiness to it, which is true of all of his work. The theme in a way excuses the herky jerk nature of the story. The characters suddenly find themselves doing things contrary to their nature and the results are sometimes darkly humorous, strangely touching, or utterly disgusting sometimes within a manner of pages or panels.

Dongzi Liu is a good talent and renders Jodorowsky well. They do a good job of making some of the most unappealing violence bearable in a weird way. I would say almost counter productive from a visual standpoint even if the tone is there. Speaking of tone, the characters faces and body language have the same exaggerated effects of the script and in a way I can say that they definitely drew what was asked of them.

This might seem particularly snarky but I liked the book overall. Just like all things that are a little nutty, you have to have a sense of humor about them and that is the only way to approach someone as maybe earnest but just as likely a con-artist as Jodorowsky. If anything, the book certainly has interesting ideas of how to fertilize trees. Read the book and you'll realize that scene is exactly what I am talking about. It's both funny, weird, slightly sarcastic, maybe a put on, but played earnest. Now that right there is a ringing endorsement.

Demented riff on heroic fantasy not unlike GoT

Never the one to shy away from controversy, Jodorowsky delivers another wallop to the reader’s gut. Royal Blood includes themes his fans are familiar with: rape, incest, mutilation, castration and enlightenment through extreme physical suffering. Love him or hate him, he does things on his own terms and if the reader feels a little uneasy about it, so be it.

Royal Blood is a lot like a demented version of Game of Thrones; with treachery, bloodshed and the in-your-face violence cranked to 11. Like a typical Jodo story, there is an important theme—or a lesson if you prefer—the one about power and ease with which it corrupts even the most noble and selfless and turns them into murdering maniacs.

Jodorowsky’s infamous dialogue is present is well; characters tend to make bold proclamations instead of simply talking. Like this! And this! Everything is important and needs to shouted! Bigger-than-life statements by everyone and vows proclaimed on the whim! You know…typical Jodologue. I don’t even see those as a fault, that’s just his style.

Artwork is out of this world. Each panel is a marvel to look at, especially battle scenes which are truly epic. They’re dynamic and the action just jumps out of those pages. Great sense for composition too. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Dongzi Liu’s work.

My only complaint is that the story is happening too fast. It’s plot, plot, plot. The book could’ve benefited from a few more pages or from slowing things down a little. While this is not Grade A Jodorowsky, it’s still a fast and entertaining read. Did I mention this book is not for the squeamish?

Gritty, Grimy, and Great

It should be said that this book is extremely graphic. There are beheadings, mutilations, explicit language, and quite a bit of nudity. If you are okay with this type of thing, then by all means keep reading. For those that are not, you may want to try another book.

Jodorowsky’s plot will be pretty familiar to anyone who has read a fantasy novel: the King is betrayed and vows to get revenge on those who have wronged him. However where Jodorowsky’s plot may bare semblance to many stories that have come before it, Royal Blood certainly follows its own path once the King reclaims what was lost to him. People who are closest to King Alvar may be his fiercest threats, relics from his past show up to throw a wrench in his plans, and a surprising relationship buds in the most unlikely of places. There are numerous scenarios that turn his world upside down.

As far as plots are concerned, Royal Blood is far from the tightest. The plot twists are easy to forsee and don’t pose much of a surprise, while the characters are overly exaggerated and quite one-sided at times, but I will be damned if this book wasn’t awesome. It will drag you through torment and inexhaustible depravities and just when you think that you are free from the destructive nature, it will dig its claws in deeper and pull you back under. Honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way. Royal Blood reveals that nothing is safe from guilt, happy endings don’t always exist, and everything will not be alright. If you are willing to embrace the dark and foreboding nature of this title, you will love it as much as I do.

Dongzi Liu, who’s only illustrating credit is Royal Blood, is supremely talented and quite possibly the best part about this book. Yes, Jodorowsky’s script is great, but the beauty of Liu’s illustrations enhances it. Liu’s characters exude the type of emotion that most illustrators seem incapable of capturing. When one of them feels pain, the emotion pours out from the pages, and when one of them feels happiness, it appears as if everything in the world will finally be okay. His work is remarkable.

The only negative aspect to this book is the plotting. I understand that graphic novels have to keep the pace cranked up so they can keep the readers attention, but this book could have slowed things down some. There are too many plot threads that happen one after another. Sometimes this detracts from the previous events because they feel like all they were doing was leading up to each new set piece. It works well enough, but each one of the events in Alvar’s life could have been fleshed out into its own separate book.

You would think that epic fantasy and graphic novels/comics would work hand in hand, and yet there are but a handful of truly great representations. Enter Royal Blood, a book that, if nothing else, screams at the comic industry to look at epic fantasy. Not only does Royal Blood succeed in being a great epic fantasy graphic novel, it succeeds in being a great book.
