About the Author
For over 45 years, David F. Strack taught German at both the high school and college level, finishing his career as an adjunct professor of German at the University of Redlands. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and German from the University of Redlands and his Master’s degree in German from Middlebury College. As part of his love of the language and culture, David traveled extensively in Europe, including several times to East Germany, the German Democratic Republic. There he became friends with four individuals who were striving to live normal lives in the communist state. For decades these friends exchanged letters with David, sharing their dreams and frustrations. His first book, LETTERS OVER THE WALL, brings you into the personal lives of everyday East Germans. In addition to leading many student and adult tour groups to Germany and Austria, David also taught English in Germany as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher. He is now retired from teaching and is living in Yucaipa, California. He still corresponds with his friends in Germany, and visits them whenever possible.

Interesting and enlightening read!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. In the early 1970's, the author met a number of East German citizens while at a conference in that country. What followed were years of correspondence between these friends from East Germany and the United States. Scattered among the early years were visits by the author to his friends in East Germany since they were not allowed to come visit him. Now, after more than 40 years of friendship and correspondence comes this book that shares the contemporaneous feelings and views of people on both sides of the wall. The author does a great job of putting the information shared in these letters in the historical context of life in East Germany and what was happening in the world on the other side of the wall.

Through these letters, ordinary East Germans described their dreams for their lives over the course of many years of correspondence. Many of those hopes and dreams seem quite mundane to us in the West: the ability to purchase or build a home, the ability to take a vacation when and where you want and the ability to get out and see the world beyond the wall. The book then describes the author's and the East Germans' excitement following the fall of the Berlin Wall and follows each of their lives after they were finally allowed to live out their dreams. As will be seen in this book, the dream was realized by some, while others were left bitterly disappointed.

Kudos to the author for realizing the history and the very interesting story contained in all those old letters on his shelf.

A unique perspective of the German Democratic Republic

An excellent read, the correspondence with four citizens of the German Democratic Republic tells of warm friendships that crossed international and philosophical boundaries. The book covers the lives of four people living in a society that is often thought of as "bleak and gray." It is not a book about the Stasi or political intrigue but is rather about the ordinary and yet often unique events that lie outside the political realm. However, what might seem as ordinary in the United States is often seen very differently from inside the GDR.

The personal comments by the author are well placed and appropriate in providing historical clarity to the events described in the letters and are often sprinkled with dry humor. Mr. Strack's personal travels to the two Germanys give the book a sense of authenticity that goes beyond the letters.

Very informative and compelling read! A unique perspective on the Cold War.

Letters Over The Wall is a history book. This book is about the aftermath of WWII. It covers a time line from 1949 to 2015, including the aftermath of the fall of the "Wall." The correspondence between the author and four east Germans who all became life-long friends reflected the sentiments of those friends on the east side of the wall (i.e.,the GDR) during the cold war. Their "freedom of speech" was expressed only through their letters translated by Strack in California.

Strack tells a fascinating story from beginning to end of his relationship with those four very articulate (English & German) individuals. The text represents a unique historical perspective of east Germany during the cold war and its aftermath.

One of those friends, Gerhard, made a statement that hit home with me: “As I’m taught, Americans are very poorly informed about world politics and most don’t have any interest.” That’s me: ignorant and apathetic. I still have very little interest in politics at any level anywhere. This text, for the first time, peaked my interest in the politics of the cold war. I do believe that politics are interesting from an historical perspective as demonstrated in this book. The letters were a very interesting way to understand the zeitgeist changes over the past 45 years.

Strack created an easy to read and understandable text. I think it would be very suitable for secondary educators who teach world or European history to use this book to supplement a broader history text. Strack captured a lot of facts and history of the cold war through the letters of those four restless individuals trapped for 28 years in East Germany. Their letters reflected their individual personal reality that could not have been presented in a better way.

A very good read

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It looked so unassuming at the library and so ancient with it's old dust jacket, but this book is another timeless work, by someone I wish I had come into contact with in my early twenties as opposed to now in my thirties. This book shows people in very easy to understand language how Schizophrenia actually happens and how people often use "difference" to equate with wrong or right thinking. He shows how Cartesian Dualism fails to address the real underlying problems at hand in interpersonal relationships. The self defines itself through the eyes of others and can constantly feel the need for justification of importance or merit to the point of irrationality. But also that others can come to associate the irrationality as something wrong or immoral about the person as opposed to a disorder the self is just completely unconscious of. In other words the person comes to believe that they are in and of themselves wrong or right based on their interactions with other people and begin to define themselves opposite to anything they feel is not their self in order to feel right or prove someone elses falsity. This places the individual in a "untenable" position. They are no more an actor upon themselves but constantly re-evaluating everyone around them in order to try to escape this position, what they fail to realize is that no escape is possible and that life can present unanswerable conditions. Often the person going through this experience will feel as though they are unable to decide what is right or wrong for themselves. This leads to a sort of paranoia of the sort that nobody likes them or that nobody thinks about them and they project the image that they could care less about what anyone else thinks about them. There seems to be a sort of thrashing about and rehashing of thoughts with an inability to relate to others and alienation sets in. The book uses many literature examples of untenable positions as well as psychiatric situations and recordings to illustrate the process of the mind of someone dealing with schizophrenia and the inability of the disorder to exist outside of a relation to others. I still liked Politics of Experience more but this book is highly recommended as well.

A Gem

Note: This review is based on the paperback. With examples from clinical experience and theory, existential literature, fine art, and children's stories, R. D. Laing illustrates how the pressures of conformity act upon individuals in our society. Each of us is constantly influenced by others as we influence them. Authority figures judge others and create realities for both themselves and those being judged.

The book affirms a personal world. It debunks the idea that phantasy can be observed by another as a series of facts. Phantasy, an object relations term intentionally not spelled with an `f,' is the real experience of a subject. A social phantasy is an internalized experience by a group. For example, a dominant group phantasy is that the therapist has the `answers.' We can think of this as `expertise phantasy'. If only the patient could find the answer he would cease to suffer.

One person can only infer through language and gesture what the experience of another can be. Laing said elsewhere: I cannot experience your experience.

We must tolerate ambiguity and paradox. Laing cites the teachings of Hsi Yun, a Zen Master of about 840 A.D: "That the real difficulty is not so much in his questions being unanswerable as in his continuing in the state of mind that leads him to ask them."

Selves for Liang can be either authentic or false. False selves are an adaptation to false realities. Laing explores and illustrates everyday untenable situations, identity, attribution, pretense, elusion, delusion, and collusion.

This is well worth reading. I read it first at age 17 and didn't understand it well. Forty years later it makes for better reading. It's a gem.

THE CONTROVERSIAL PSYCHIATRIST LOOKS AT THE "PSYCHOTIC," etc.

Ronald David Laing (1927-1989) was a Scottish psychiatrist who was often considered part of the anti-psychiatry movement (although he rejected this characterization); he wrote many other books such as Politics of Experience, The politics of the family and other essays, etc. He wrote in the Preface to the First 1961 Edition [revised edition, 1969], "I shall try to depict persons within a social system or 'nexus' of persons, in order to try to understand some of the ways in which each affects each person's experience of himself and of how interaction takes form. Each contributes to the other's fulfillment or destruction." (Pg. xi)

He begins by saying, "is unconscious phantasy a mode or a type of experience? If it is, it is with a difference. If not, what is it, if not a figment of imagination? The psychoanalytic thesis can be stated thus: it is not POSSIBLE to prove the existence of unconscious phantasy to the person who is immersed in it. Unconscious phantasy can be known to be phantasy only after the person's own emergence from it." (Pg. 3)

He asks, "Is it a contradiction in terms to speak of 'unconscious experience'? A person's experience comprises anything that 'he' or 'any part of him' is aware of, whether 'he' or every part of him is aware of every level of his awareness or not. His experiences are inner or outer; of his own body or of other person's bodies; real or unreal; private or shared. The psychoanalytic contention is that our desires present themselves to us in our experience, but we may not recognize them. This is one sense in which we are unconscious of our experience. We misconstrue it." (Pg. 8)

He observes, "Some 'psychotics' look on psychoanalysis as a relatively safe place to tell someone what they really think. They are prepared to play at being a patient and even to keep up the charade by PAYING the analyst, provided he does not 'cure' them. They are even prepared to pretend to be cured if it will look bad for him if he is having a run of people who do not seem to be getting better. Not an unreasonable contract." (Pg. 28)

He suggests, "the man-in-the-street takes a lot for granted: for instance, that he has a body which has an inside and an outside... The ordinary person does not reflect upon these basic elements of his being; he takes his way iof experiencing himself and others to be 'true.' However, some people do not. They are often called schizoid. Still more, the schizophrenic does not take for granted his own person... he lacks the usual sense of personal unity, a sense of himself as the agent of his own actions rather than as a robot, a machine, a thing, and of being the author of his own perceptions, but rather feels that someone else is using his eyes, his ears, etc." (Pg. 35-36)

He argues, "The most significant theoretical and methodological development in the psychiatry of the last two decades is, in my view, the growing dissatisfaction with any theory or study of the individual which isolates him from his context. Efforts have been made from different angles to remedy this position." (Pg. 65) He asserts, "One basic function of genuinely analytical or existential therapy is the provision of a setting in which as little as possible impedes each person's capacity to discover his own self... A large part of the art of therapy is in the tact and lucidity with which the analyst points out the ways in which collusion maintains illusions or disguises delusions." (Pg. 105)

Laing is not the highly controversial and polarizing figure he once was; with the passage of time, one can more easily appreciate what he had to say.

Pure poetry

The gist of the negative criticism about this book, including the review by Lionel Shriver, appears to me to be an expectation for a more traditional linear path with a recognizable climax and/or resolution. I felt no wish for this and was much more moved by its poetic structure. The lyricism was amplified by the juxtapositions and the unpredictable time movements. Isn't this how the mind works? I loved the dark interiority and the emotional drift. There is a leitmotif of absences and gaps and inability to connect along with a reverence for the unobtainable dark beauty that resides therein. I don't understand criticism that demands that writing turn a way it was never meant to go and supposes that a better book would have been written.

but it's too edgy for me, talks way too little about music, what it takes to be a musician, performances etc. I thought this would be a book about what it's like to be a musician. I love music, bands, Rock n Roll and everything to do with music. But it seems to me that this books is more about sex than anything else. Maybe I'm too old for this book. Yes, I am too old for this book. Maybe there is that much casual sex in the music scene but calling up a guy from the street and then have (presumably unprotected) sex is too much. I spent a couple of month with a band in the (roaring?) sixties and none of that went on.

Besides that I didn't like the excessive use of descriptive adjectives. Example: Billy, black-coated, yellow-legged, pink-footed, rubber-bonneted, walks in a large circle. It makes me dizzy reading it. It could be because English is my second language. It's not that I don't understand it but it just seems to much for me. The other expample: His face, in the half-light, has an ursine, lumpy quality. He looks like a bear?

Of course describing Germans (being German) as people who hate everybody and who hate themselves didn't exactly help.

I Know It's Only Rock and Roll.

A very convincing on the road story. Having always had an interest in the back stairwells of Rock, I found this represented what I've always heard about tours; sex and drugs are mostly an attempt to override the loneliness and boredom of the road. The characters were written deftly and I found myself able to picture them with stand ins from the music world. The severe ups and downs of the music business were well illustrated. Anyone who has dreamed of being a rock star should probably consider this book, but middle aged women who are finding themselves aged out of the world they considered their own will relate.

Urs Widmer is co-founder of Verlag der Autoren, an author-owned publishing house focusing on texts related to the performing arts. His other works include Alois, Der blaue Siphon, and Ein Leben als Zwerg.  He lives and works in Zürich. Donal McLaughlin specializes in translating Swiss fiction.

Super-rich and memorable novella

Powerfully written, colorful and lyrical novella describing an unrequited love story, contrasting deep poverty with stolidly guarded-wealth and status, and highlighting an early Swiss passion for nascent 20th century classical music. It is also a tribute to mother Clara and her beloved conductor Edwin. It covers many decades. It is situated before and after 1929 and the here and now in Switzerland and Italy, with the historical founding father of mother Clara’s family a stowaway from Abyssinia. In 1929, many rich family fortunes evaporated or halved in value, but the Swiss have always had-in good times and bad-plenty of business acumen and management skills.
The action hurtles along at breakneck speed, and I would be a spoiler if I went into further detail. Awesome powers of description. Cameo appearances of e.g. Béla Bartók and Benito Mussolini. Intriguing sketches of the Swiss and how they survived WW II. But mother Clara is the quirky, borderline hero of this fable about lions and dogs. This fabulous tribute is written by her only son. What about the father? He is mentioned only once in this tale, but Urs Widmer (1938-2014) of whose existence I was unaware until a few days ago, made him the subject of his next novella, “My Father’s Book”.
What a writer to create so much excitement, richness and enjoyment in so few pages! Reading groups will surely enjoy discussing mother Clara’s life and times and what made her so special.
