Radical, Not Liberal

The word "radical" does not mean "extreme" but rather "going to the root." That is, being radical is about going to the root of the problem, the root of our patriarchal a.k.a. dominator society, finding solutions for overthrowing it, and living as much as possible outside of the dominant system. During the same-sex marriage debate, I kept reflecting on how marriage was invented for the purpose of enslaving women. I kept signing petitions in favor of gay marriage while feeling apprehensive and wondering why lesbians, especially, would want to participate in such a patriarchal establishment.

Reading the anthology That's Revolting was a great relief, because it proves that many people see things the same way I do, from a radical point of view rather than a liberal point of view. That's Revolting is for those who want a nonviolent revolution, not a white picket fence and a house in suburbia. It is for those who question the American dream rather than gobble up capitalism, respectability, or the nuclear family lifestyle. It is for those who wish to overthrown marriage and the military, not participate in them. This diverse anthology is social criticism, inspiration, words of reassurance that radical activism continues, and a call to action.

Magnificent

Nowhere have I seen such an amazing range of essays about the complexities of queer lives. The book is fiery, exciting, and full of wisdom. I especially liked "Gay Art Guerrillas," where Sarah Schulman and Jim Hubbard detail the rise and fall of downtown New York in the eighties with lively anecdotes and cutting wit. "Calling All Restroom Revolutionaries" offers a step-by-step plan for making public bathrooms gender neutral and accessible, and offers a stunning critique of identity politics in the process. And the opening essay, "Dr. Laura, Sit on My Face," I've read over and over again, even once to a friend over the telephone. I live outside of the major gay destination cities, so this book was a welcome breath of fresh air -- Queer Eye for the Straight GIRL isn't exactly speaking to me, if you know what I mean. I recommend this book to anyone with a brain.

This is the book I had always dreamed they would use in my queer classes at school!!! Activism, cultural analysis and personal narratives help push what has been understood as "gay and lesbian studies" from the now "safe" grounds of identity to the terrain of revolution. From racism in queer organizing to hilarious direct action That's Revolting is a radical a re-thinking of all that we through we knew about social change, gender, class and race.

Informational without being boring

I downloaded this for my son to read since he is interested in samurai. The book is short enough to keep a preteen's attention and allow them to understand the culture of feudal Japan. I found it to be informational without getting boring. I particularly enjoyed the end of the book where the author was at the shrine looking at the artifacts from the 47 Ronin.

An enlightening and interesting read for anyone!

Sylvia Browne takes a different approach in "The Other Side and Back" by making it a guide to achieving and understanding the lessons she's become famous for teaching the world. It has a few repeated items items from "Adventures of a Psychic", only because those facts are important to know for the in-depth study of the lessons in the new book. I thought I had found out all Sylvia had to teach(from watching her lectures on TV, reading her biography, and attending a live lecture), but I learned SO MANY new things, I was astonished and somewhat embarrassed that I had assumed I knew it all already. "The Other Side and Back" tells us all about the dark side,where the bad people go since there is no flame-ridden hell like we had assumed, how to astral travel in our dreams, interesting (and humorous) ideas and stories about the mind and its potential.I loved this book because it gave an all around revitalizing look at how we can control our mindset and vocabulary to lead more positive, learned lives and finally reach our home with God.

believe it or not...

this book actually did "change my life". I am a recent college graduate who is very scientific minded, but I grew up in a very religious household, so I am at a point in my life where I am quite skeptical of anything pertaining to "God" or "angels" or "spirits", etc. But I have seen Sylvia on Montel Williams, and I was curious enough to buy this book. I am so glad that I did, because whether or not any of it is true, I came away with such a feeling of peace, self-worth, and control over my life, that it was more than worth the price of the book. I have more insight into things I always felt may be true, and I also understand and accept with much more peace things that happen around me and to me. I try now, more than ever, to learn from every experience. The guidance, humor, and warmth make this book a wonderful read. Highly recommended. Thank you, Sylvia!

Finding Solace

I purchased three copies of this book; one for myself, one for my daughter, and one for a friend who had recently lost a loved one. This book does help you find some solace when you are "searching" as I was, and still am, after the loss of my son. Sylvia does present certain insight to allow you to identify and find your own way to your personal quest for answers. Sylvia is very matter-of-fact in her writings, and it's easy to relate and understand the scenarios she presents to get her point across. I did also purchase the audio tape set relevant to this book. However, if you plan to attend one of her lectures, do not bother to purchase the tapes, as the lectures are almost verbatim, except for audience questions, to what is on the tapes. In fact, if you want Sylvia to autograph your book, don't buy it until you attend the lecture. She only autographs the books she and her "ministers" sell at the lecture. In Sylvia's book, "Adventures of a Psychic," she makes comment about a psychic she herself went to see when she was only beginning to do more than private readings. Sylvia was diappointed with the non-sympathetic, show-biz demeanor of the psychic that was bluntly answering heart-felt questions from the audience and saying virtually..."Next!"...without even taking the time to pause and be sincere with the person asking the question. Unfortunately, I must say, Sylvia is guilty of this very same thing with her lecture audiences...too much show-biz...not enough respect for the person truly seeking answers to questions that are heart-wrenching. I attended her lecture "To The Other Side and Back" in Seattle, in August after my son passed on in April. The lecture encompassed no more than the tapes I had bought just previous to the lecture. My daughter, my son's friends, friends from my work place,and I went away that night very disappointed in Sylvia and her lack of concern for the audience. Her granddaughter, although adorable, was not only a distraction to the lecture but an unnecessary part of such a serious gathering. I am writing Sylvia and Montel Williams about my disdain with the "show-biz" aspect of Sylvia's lectures. I urge her to stop touring for the dollars if she is truly tired of touring. She is doing none of us a favor by continuing, just for the money.

Seems to be directed at a very small audience

The book was about how to make deals in the Silicon Valley. Info on venture capitalists and making powerpoint presentations). It was good for what it was. I was hoping for more information about the area, where things are, etc. (whereas there was a little but not much). I probably needed to read more about the book description before I bought it. Seems to be directed at a very specific audience.

His connection to the topic is through chance encounters with more interesting people whose words you would be wiser to follow. Consider the author's Illuminating Glossary that you would have paid $10 to learn the definitions to: "Crowdsourcing, Deck, Family and Friends, Financial Runway,Hard Stop, Hitting your numbers, Keep their powder dry, Pivot, Pony Up". LOL

A great insight into how the Valley works.

This is a great book - gives an awesome insight into how Silicon Valley really works. Marc has really nailed it in terms of walking through the journey of the entrepreneur. He uses the jargon of the Valley as context for each of the steps you will follow and gives tangible and useful guidance at every stage. Marc uses excellent examples to illustrate his points, and he has generously shared the good, the bad and the ugly of his many years in this business.

It will save you a bunch of time in learning the lay of the land, and will definitely help you avoid the missteps along the way that can be fatal to a company exploring Silicon Valley for the first time.

About the Author

Kathleen Haywood, PhD, is an associate dean and professor in the College of Education at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. The lead author on the previous editions of Archery: Steps to Success, she is a former competitor who has taught archery at several universities, both for the general student body and for teacher preparation students. Haywood has a background in motor learning and motor development, which lends itself to implementing instructional models for participants of all ages. She resides in St. Charles, Missouri.

Catherine Lewis was the coauthor on the previous editions of Archery: Steps to Success. She is a former competitor who has taught archery to people of all ages, especially children in both school and camp settings. She is currently a physical education teacher in the Riverview Gardens School District in St. Louis County, Missouri. She resides in St. Peters, Missouri.

I bought this to help the young Katniss Everdeen fan in our house properly learn the art of archery. It's a great book with clear, sequential instructions. Full-color photography helps with some of the sport's subtleties which I wouldn't have otherwise grasped. I'd highly recommend this to any beginner or intermediate archer. It's terrific.

Great Resource for Detailed Information

This is a practical, highly detailed guide for archers to improve their technique, one step at a time, up to an intermediate level. The book details equipment nomenclature, selection, sizing and classification...and that's just the first chapter!

When I took archery in college, we got verbal instruction and hands-on practice, but this would have really helped further my understanding of the various equipment that is available, and the manner in which to maximize successful execution. This book covers so much, and it does it in a moderate manner, with easy to understand explanations - despite a few typos early on - for practical approaches and proper methods of fulfilling individual procedures, and doing it right.

Each section concludes with a success summary that can be used as a guideline by scoring what is learned through actual practice. This is a school-book approach to the archery, with brilliant, full-color photographs and illustrations which reinforce the subject matter within each of the chapters.

I consider this a fantastic resource, and I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about archery, whether for indoor or outdoor competitions, or even for bow fishing and hunting, "Archery: Steps to Success" is certain to help improve archery skills, both physically and mentally. This is a great way to enjoy a sport that dates back thousands of years B.C., and with so many advancements in technology, this is an indispensable way to prepare to take on any target.

I decided to pick this up for my son as he is taking an archery class as part of his gym class in middle school. Through that class, he has developed a strong interest in the sport and wanted to learn more about the basics of sport. He has been glued to this book every day when he comes home from school. The book delivers exactly what I expected when I read the back cover and skimmed through the table of contents. I am planning to purchase a small target for my son as a Christmas gift so that he can practice in our back yard. For now, he's been using plastic tip arrows and shooting at our woodpile. Just seeing him having such a strong passion for the sport and enjoying himself while learning is incredible!

PS: I'm not sure why one reviewer decided to comment on "history" of the sport. This is supposed to be an instructional book, not a history lesson.
