Helping hurting people

Anyone that wants to grasp what nouthetic counseling is should read this book. Adams does a nice job of laying out the book so his readers can comprehend his position. He dedicates the entire 4th chapter to defining, "What is Nouthetic Counseling?" He states, "Nouthetic counseling in its fullest sense, then, is simply an application of the means of sanctification p.73" (I.e. helping others grow in Christ). People often accuse Adams of equating everything to sin, but he clearly makes a distinction between biochemical problems and non-biochemical. If you are an integrationist, Adams work will help you understand the "other side" of the debate. If you are completely a non-integrationist this may be your "pillar text" concerning counseling. Either way, if you are a person trying to help hurting people, this book will help equip you, even if you do not fully agree with Adams approach.

Provocative in its time, but its time to move on.

This book by Dr. Adams is remarkable because it opened the debate among Christians about the practice of counseling. Adams goes after some easy targets, namely Freud and Rogers. He invites the Christian to examine the sufficiency of Scripture for providing counsel in times when wisdom is needed. He identifies important passages in Scripture that certainly encourage us to counsel one another in love and truth.
However, there are several notable shortcomings. First, Adams adopts a simplistic approach to mental illness - one that has potential to do considerable harm if misapplied. While he rightly differentiates between faux non-organic "illnesses" and bona fide chemical brain disorders, he neglects a significant in-between region that consists of deeply troubled individuals whose cognitive make-ups or personality organizations make responding positively to simplistic and direct confrontation unlikely. The nuances of relationship-building that are an important component of therapy and discipleship appear to be lacking.
Second, to say this is a reformed perspective on counseling appears to misapply the meaning of "reformed." Reformed theology acknowledges the Lordship of Christ in all things, including psychology and psychotherapy. To exclude some theories, practices, and methods simply because they are extra-biblical (not anti-biblical, just not in the Bible) denies the Christian's ability, even the command via the Cultural Mandate, to examine the truth in God's world and apply it in faith and wisdom. It is best embodied by Kuyper's insistence that there is not a square-inch of creation over which Christ does not say "mine!" Unfortunately, Dr. Adams seems to miss this wider application of reformed theology in favor of a vehement rejection of theories that are becoming historical relics and an application of Biblical behaviorism. Adams is unable to maintain a sense of consistency in his own model: he rejects some secularists but praises the reality therapy of Glasser and Mouwer.
Whether Adams intended for this to occur or not, his book has become a rallying point around which to bash psychology and psychotherapy. There is without question some truly unbiblical stuff in historical psychology and some truly hideous stuff in contemporary pop psychology. However, the study of the workings of the human mind, human thought processes, emotions, and behaviors, is as important an endeavor as studying any other aspect of creation. We cannot simply toss the whole discipline out because those who pioneered its study rebelled against God and sought to suppress His truth in unrighteousness. This is the classic ad hominum argument. As Christians, we should do better.
I am grateful that Dr. Adams has given us a starting place to recognize the dangers of the likes of Freud and Rogers (he should have come down hard on Jung - he's both dangerous and looney), the high value of Scripture in providing counsel for wisdom, comfort, and therapy as needed, and the importance of examining psychology closely to separate truth from error. However, it is time to move on. Let's elevate the dialogue and stop knocking down the straw man. He's about out of straw.

Good Intro to Biblically-Centered Counseling

What if you suddenly found yourself counseling a friend on a problem they are facing? What would be the basis or foundation for your advice? Would you quickly do a "google search" to find the latest self-help book on the subject? Would you go to the library and consult a Psychology journal for the latest theories on behavior modification?

If you are a Christian, your answer should be "No! The word of God!" The Bible is the Christian's basis for wisdom in living. The Bible addresses the most fundamental issues of mankind. The Bible has the answers for life's most perplexing problems. Therefore, Christian counseling must be BIBLICAL counseling. In this book, Jay Adams provides a general introduction to this topic of Biblical counseling. I found this book to be a helpful introduction to the subject with many "golden nuggets" of practical advice.

Sadly, many pastors and other leaders have ceded ground to Psychology and Psychiatry. Under the guise of "mental illness," these theories attempt to shift responsibility from the counselee and blame outside influences (pg 1-19) (By this assessment, I am NOT including legitimate "organic" problems, such as brain or chemical damage). Freud's principles are based on the belief that religion is invented to fulfill man's needs. Furthermore, his views "encouraged irresponsible people to persist in and expand their irresponsibility...and made it respectable." (pg 17). Christians, on the other hand, understand that the basic problem in man is SIN (Romans 3). Only the Bible provides the solution to the problem of sin - the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Bible's message is that all people are utterly sinful and deserve judgment and hell. However, sinful men can find salvation and reconciliation to God through faith in Jesus Christ through His atoning death on the cross. Thus, Biblical counseling is Gospel-saturated counseling.

Adams uses the term "nouthetic counseling" to describe Biblical counseling. The term "nouthetic" is derived from the New Testament term for "admonish" or "warn" in such passages as Colossians 3:16 and Romans 15:14 ("...I [Paul] also am convinced that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able also to ADMONISH one another"). The basic idea in the New Testament is that Christians must CONFRONT each other. The term includes the following elements: 1.) Concern for the benefit of the counselee, 2.) something is wrong that must be confronted, 3.) thinking and behavior must change, 4.) Verbal instruction must be used, 5.) the goal of this instruction is for the counselee to confirm to biblical standards, and 6.) Scripture is sufficient for this advice (2 Tim 3:16... "All Scripture is God-breathed and is USEFUL or PROFITABLE for teaching, reproving, correction, and training in righteousness") (pg 44-50).

The book does an especially good job of modeling biblical counseling. As I read the book, I made note of the following helpful tips for the biblical counselor:
- Watch for the counselee's harboring resentment as the source of physical and mental problems (Prov 26:23-26) (pg 26-34). Psalms 51, 38, and 32 show that there can be physical effects of unrepentant sin (pg 115-122)
- Don't feed the counselee's avoidance patterns. Instead "speak the truth in love" and call a spade a space. "It is not merciful to be nonjudgmental"(pg 33-34) Don't minimize their sin with compliments (Prov 25:20) (Pg 140).
- Be careful of becoming so sympathetic that you fail to hold them responsible (pg 58) and fail to think straight about their problem (pg 59). To say that "Your problem seems basically to be the result of sin" will not discourage the counselor, but rather will give him hope (pg 139). Sometimes the direct question may be in order, "Where has the present sinful behavior (or attitude) gotten you?" (pg 210)
- Don't act as "neutral" in the counseling environment. Instead, be intensely concerned (2 Cor 2:4, 11:29, 3 Jn 4). (pg 53-54)
- Stress to the counselee the need to stop running and hiding, but, rather repenting (pg 55).
- Remember the goal of counseling is conformity to the likeness to Christ (Eph 4:13). "By His power the Spirit then enables the client to begin to put off the old man with its old patters of life, and to put on the new man with its new biblical patters." (pg 74). [side note - I do not like the term "client"...it sounds too professional and uninvolved]
- Spend less time finding out how people feel. Instead, look for behavior. Ultimately behavior determines feelings. (pg 93) (c.f. Genesis 4:3-7)
- Use the book of Proverbs to exhort the counselee to wise living! (pg 99-100)
- Don't be afraid to provide loving rebuke of sinful attitudes and actions (pg 101-102)
- Look for "I can't" kind of speech. Remind them of the faithful God of 1 Cor 10:13. Set this tone early in counseling (pg 132, 135) Once they see progress, also remind them of 1 Cor 10:12 - "Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall."
- After you model Biblical problem solving, send them home to discover a solution to a particular problem and report what they find. (pg 193-195)
- Assign "homework" based on bible study, prayer and introspection. The Problem-Solution worksheet on pg 197 might be helpful: "What Happened, What I Did, What I Should have Done, What I Now Must Do"
- Use the "Iceberg" method to discover the underlying issues. "Whatever is protruding above the surface...is material for counseling. As the counselor chips away at the topic, more and more of the iceberg rises, until eventually the bulk of it is in sight." (pg 203)
- Point the counselee to Scripture to understand Godly communication and anger resolution(Ephesians 4) (pg 217-224)

As complements to this book, I also highly recommend "Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands" by Paul David Tripp and "How People Change" by Timothy Lane and Paul David Tripp.

About the Author
Dr. Walter Nicholson is the Ward H. Patton Emeritus Professor of Economics at Amherst College and a visiting professor at Ave Maria University, Naples, Florida. Throughout his teaching career, Dr. Nicholson has sought to develop in students an appreciation for the value of economic models in the study of important social questions. He also has enjoyed showing students some of the stranger things that economists have sought to model. Dr. Nicholson received his Ph.D. in economics from MIT. Most of his research is in the area of labor economics, especially policy questions related to unemployment. He lives in Naples, Florida and Montague, Massachusetts, where he and his wife enjoy the frequent visits of their eight grandchildren.

Dr. Christopher Snyder is the Joel Z. and Susan Hyatt Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, where he pursues research and teaching interests in microeconomic theory, industrial organization, and law and economics. He is a research associate in the National Bureau of Economic Research, serves on the board of the Industrial Organization Society, and is an associate editor of the Review of Industrial Organization. Snyder received his Ph.D. from MIT. His recent research has appeared in leading economics journals, including the Review of Economics and Statistics and Quarterly Journal of Economics. He lives in Hanover, New Hampshire, with his wife, who also teaches economics at Dartmouth, and three daughters.

Best book I have seen yet

I started taking drafting courses when I was a sophomore in high school, moved on to pre college 1 my junior year, then pre college 2 my senior year, and then college. Having experienced mechanical technology, aviation ground school, as well as hydraulics and fluidics, this book is by far the best I have seen. The illustraions are superb and the written explanations make it easy to absorb for any level of education. This is the book you are looking for!

Bleach is author Tite Kubo's second title. Kubo made his debut with Zombiepowder., a four-volume series for Weekly Shonen Jump. To date, Bleach has been translated into numerous languages and has also inspired an animated TV series that began airing in Japan in 2004. Beginning its serialization in 2001, Bleach is still a mainstay in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump. In 2005, Bleach was awarded the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen (boys) category.

"Bleach: The Official Character Book 2' is a wonderful resource guide and reference for a great price!

"Bleach", is currently of the most successful Japanese animation and manga series in Japan. It's popularity reaches worldwide and since 2001, many fans have clamored for it's action-based storyline featured on television, manga series, films and video games.

And it's all thanks to series creator, writer and illustrator Noriaki "Tite" Kubo.

For those who have watched this series since the very beginning, they have watched the amount of characters grow from five characters to a number that I have no idea how many there are at this point. And aside from the characters, they also have incredible attacks and abilities that they are mentioned so much during the series, fans may easily have remembered them but to tell you the truth, there are so many, it's hard to keep in track unless you are a dedicated hardcore fan.

But fear not, in 2008, Viz Media released "Bleach: The Official Character Book" which not only gave information and trivia regarding its characters, fans also got to read a summary of what had taken place in the series so far.

Since 2008, there have been an explosion in terms of how many characters were featured on the manga and anime series.

And so, it is time once again for a new "Bleach: The Official Character Book 2" as many soul reapers and antagonists such as the Arrancars and characters such as the Visoreds have been featured on the anime and manga series as well as their special abilities. Things are becoming a bit more difficult to keep in track, so for many fans, the release of this book will be a blessing.

Full of detailed information for a wonderful price, if you are a fan of Tite Kubo's "Bleach", "Bleach: The Official Character Book 2' is a wonderful resource guide and reference.

The character profiles for this second volume showcase profile data of a character, their Zanpaku-to (a special ability that the user and their sword can unleash). There are humor for example Tite Kubo's reference to Rangiku's "watermelons" and there are experienced events (brief summaries) that were featured in the series in regard to that character.

For me, my confusion has always been in regards to the Arrancar and Visoreds. There are so many of them and it's got to the point where I am confused. So, I was happy that we have the character references to each of these new characters that were featured.

It's important to note that if you owned the first book, you definitely want to keep it as the antagonists from the earlier storyline are featured in that book. Also, the first book goes into detailed information about Karakura and the structure of the Soul Society.

In short, for anyone who wants to "Bleach" experience and wants to know every detail of every featured character up to the Arrancar/Visored storyline will want to own this book.

Highly recommended for "Bleach" fans!

A must for fans of BLEACH!

This is a must for any bleach fan. This cover from where the first book left off until Aizen's invasion of the world of the living! There are plenty of facts and explanations of terms that a true bleach fan is dying to know! I absolutely love this and cannot wait for the third book to come out in English. It would be wise to buy and read book one first, SOULS...The Official Charactor Book, but if you have a good grasp of the manga or show, you can hop in at the second book, MASKED! I give this 5 stars, A +++

I loved this book so much!! This is the best Bleach Charecture Book ever! I loved how they went in and explained so much about the Espadas, though i didnt like how they censored Stark, Barragons, and Hallibels stuff, but other then that it was amazing! I loved the pictures at the front of the book, my favorite was the Winter Picture! I just loved how they had 4 hole pages dedicated to my favorite charecture, Grimmjow Jaggerjack!

About the Author

Dr. Brian Holloway was born in Flushing, New York in 1952 and from an early age was fascinated by the written word, dramatic performance, and the wisdom inherent in world cultures.  He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois with a concentration in literature of the Renaissance, including Shakespeare, and has served as editorial consultant and on the editorial board of Shakespeare and Renaissance Association Selected Papers, volumes 22 and 23. 

 

While in charge of Arts and Sciences at Mountain State University, Dr. Holloway headed the development of its graduate individualized study programs and its interdisciplinary general education program, Spectrum, which have enhanced the lives of many in West Virginia and other states as well.  He also served as the editorial advisor of five volumes of the school’s creative writing publication, Mountain Whispers.

 

The receipt of grants from the West Virginia Humanities Foundation allowed Dr. Holloway to pursue extensive research into the way that the book Black Elk Speaks was created as a collaboration between writer John Neihardt and Lakota holy man Nicholas Black Elk.  This research grew into an elaborate project involving archival materials, field notes, family scrapbook photos, and narratives from the Neihardt family, with whom Dr. Holloway quickly became friends.  Presentations at the Neihardt Center led to Dr. Holloway’s becoming the editor of the Neihardt Journal for six volumes spanning 1999 to 2004. 

 

Professor of English at Mountain State University in West Virginia, Dr. Holloway is also Dean of Graduate Studies.  In that capacity he has taught and guided many students as they explore their academic horizons. 

 

Dr. Holloway is the author of articles, poetry, and presentations.  His text Technical Writing Basics, published by Prentice Hall, will soon be in its fourth edition.  Proposal Writing Across the Disciplines, also published by Prentice Hall, has readers from the continental United States to the Pacific Rim. 

           

Dr. Holloway’s book Interpreting the Legacy: John Neihardt and Black Elk Speaks has been published by the University Press of Colorado.  This book combines historical research, analysis of text, and archival scholarship to discuss that famous work and the lives and times of those who produced it.  Notable in the book are rare photographs and high-resolution scans of original transcripts, manuscripts, and drawings.

 

At Mountain State University, Dr. Holloway has received the Alumni Association’s Teacher of the Year award as well as the Student Government Association’s Outstanding Professional Achievement and Faculty of the Year awards.  In the past, he has served as president and as treasurer of the West Virginia Association of College English Teachers.

I had to purchase this book for a Technical Communication class. The chapters were easy to understand and read through. The book provides many examples that you can reference when creating documents such as different forms of letters, etc.

This book is a must for anyone working in a business environment, or want to learn how to properly communicate with a business. This book covers topics such as how to write a form letter, resume and cover letter, as well as tips for writing e-mails. The book is not long and makes a great reference tool for those who want to learn how to write professional documents.

Joseph Ben-David died twenty-five years ago, in January 1986. An eminent sociologist of science, and a co-founder of this sub-discipline, he was only sixty-five years old. Few social scientists are remembered after they die and can no longer parlay their influence into the goods of this world for colleagues and acquaintances. This was not Ben-David’s fate. His work continues to be taught and referred to by scholars spread far and wide (in terms of both countries and disciplines). His students never forgot him, his books were republished, and his essays appeared in new collections.

Ben-David’s legacy includes ideas and ideals. Its central tenet is the autonomy of science, its right—and duty—to be value-free. Scholarship oriented to any goal other than the accumulation of objective knowledge about empirical reality, for him, was science no longer and did not have its authority. In this light, the life of scholarship was one of moral dedication, with nothing less than the fate of liberal democratic society depending on it. And for science to thrive, the university, its home, had to be the embodiment of the cardinal virtue of this society: the virtue of civility.

In the spirit of Ben-David, believing that scholarly debate advances common good, and rational discourse wins whichever way arguments in it are settled, this festschrift debates such core issues as the nature of science, its changing definition and position in Western society, the forms of organization optimal for scientific creativity, and the ability of the research university to foster scientific growth, while also performing its educational role.

About the Author
Rollanda E. O'Connor, PhD, is Professor of Education at the University of California, Riverside. She taught reading in special and general education classrooms for many years and has conducted numerous intervention studies in special and general education settings, explored procedures to predict in kindergarten and first grade which children are likely to develop reading difficulties, and followed the reading progress of children who received early intervention. Her longitudinal studies of intervention and assessment led to the development (with Patricia F. Vadasy) of Ladders to Literacy, a collection of phonological and print awareness activities and scaffolding suggestions for children at risk for reading problems, and the book Teaching Word Recognition: Effective Strategies for Students with Learning Difficulties. Dr. O'Connor's current research includes evaluating the effects of early, continuous intervention across the first 4 years of schooling and developing research-based interventions for students with reading difficulties in the intermediate grades.

Patricia F. Vadasy, PhD, is Senior Researcher at the Oregon Research Institute in Seattle, Washington. Her background is in early reading acquisition and instruction, instructional design, and intervention research. Dr. Vadasy oversees a research team engaged in research on effective school-based literacy interventions for at-risk and struggling students. She has published findings on her grant-funded intervention research widely in peer-reviewed journals. She is the lead author (with Rollanda E. O’Connor) of the Sound Partners code-oriented supplemental tutoring program and coauthor (with Rollanda E. O’Connor) of the Ladders to Literacy preschool and kindergarten programs.

Excellent source for research-based reading interventions

This book is both scholarly and practical. If you really want to know which teaching strategies and activities are supported by research, this is the best of the many intervention books I have read. It covers all the areas of reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension and more. In most chapters there is a fairly concise list of best practices. The teaching strategies used in research studies are described in an appropriate amount of detail and the bibliography in each chapter will lead you to more complete explanations. This is not really a how to book, but it will help you decide on which strategies and programs will be most useful for leading children to success in literacy.
