Study Guide for the NEC

Originally I bought one of the "cheaper" study guides for my Electrical License Exam. The old saying,"you get what you pay for", definitely applies here. While other study guides offer multiple questions from the NEC they are the "seek and find" type. In other words, copy a segment from the NEC, remove a word or two and then find that segment in the code and replace the word(s) removed. While this method is good for familiarizing ones self with the actual book it does not do much for passing the Licensing Exam, where you will be required to think about all the answers and often use two or more sections of the code to come up with the final answer. This is where Stallcup's Electrical Design really shines. Stallcup's goes through the step by step process of solving the questions, not just finding answers in the code book. While the cheaper guide helped me learn the code book, Stallcup's helped me earn my electrical license, definitely a wise investment.

Entertaining debut for a new sailing navy hero

In the wake of the fictional Horatio Hornblower, Jack Aubrey, Richard Delancey, Nicholas Ramage, Richard Bolitho, Nathaniel Drinkwater, Thomas Kydd, William Rennie, and Kit Killigrew - and the real historical officer Michael Fitton, whose equally amazing career was novelised by Showell Styles - yet another hero of the age of fighting sail takes to the quarterdeck.

In this book Sean Thomas Russel introduces the half-English, half French officer Lieutenant Charles Hayden.

To follow in the footsteps of writers of the calibre of C.S. Forester, Patrick O'Brien, and C Northcote Parkinson must take a great deal of courage, and to make a new naval hero stand out from them is quite difficult. While I don't think Russell's first book is quite up to the standard of those three, it is as good or better than most of the more recent crop of historical naval fiction.

Charles Hayden is the son of an English father, long dead, and a French mother who has remarried, to an American ship-owner, and re-located to Boston. At the start of the book, in 1793, Hayden has distinguished himself as a lieutenant under the command of Captain Bourne, one of the Royal Navy's most succesful frigate captains, and as a commander of smaller ships, but is currently without an appointment. Hayden is summoned to the Admiralty to be interviewed by the secretary of the board, Philip Stephens, and offered the post of First Lieutenant of the new frigate HMS Themis - but with secret orders that make the job a poisoned chalice of the worst kind.

HMS Themis is not a happy ship - there had been a murder on board during the previous cruise, and Stephens is worried both that something is not right on the Themis. The captain, Josiah Hart, has obtained the position because he and his wife have considerable political influence, but there are doubts about his abilities. Hayden is to send secret reports about what is going on aboard HMS Themis: he regards the order to act as the Admiralty's spy with horror, but without influence he has no choice but to accept the appointment.

From the day he arrives on board Hayden finds that Philip Stephen's fears about the Themis were justified. Between the internal threat on the ship, and that posed by the French, it looks like Chales Hayden will have to face every stock cliche in historical naval fiction ...

Russell includes an author's note which gives some details of which characters are real (Stephens, Admiral Duncan) and which were fictional but inspired by real people (for example, Captain Bourne was inspired by Nelson's favourite frigate captain, Henry Blackwood.)

I enjoyed reading this and can recommend it.

Good fun and a creditable first effort

Charles Hayden joins Horatio Hornblower as a boys' own Royal Navy hero of the Napoleonic era. If you like CS Forrester and Alexander Kent et al, you'll like this. Subtlety is not a pre-requisite of the genre but this author creates ambiguities and tensions in the hero. It will take more than a first book to see how these play out. If there is a criticism, it is that the book is a bit long: we don't have to know every time a sailor salutes and the love interest on land is unconvincing. But the action is splendid and that underpins the rest.

Inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame in 2008, Martin Evening is an internationally renowned professional photographer. Working principally on studio-based beauty photography, Martin uses Photoshop to retouch or manipulate to some degree nearly every image he produces. This regular everyday experience with the software has enabled him to gain extensive specialist knowledge of Photoshop.

A highly informative book for the professional and the very very keen

This is the shortest time between editions that I’m aware of, the last version of this book came out in November 2014, which was of course CC 2014 version. The first version I bought was back in 2000 which was Adobe Photoshop for Photographers 5.5. then there was 6 and 7, Adobe then changed the name to Creative Suit so there was of course CS 1 thru to CS 6, and now we have CC ,Creative Cloud. Back in 2000 I used Photoshop just for negative scans. I eventually went on to shooting digital and developing an efficient workflow using Bridge, the Raw dialogue box and Photoshop all with the help of this series of books, they really have been highly informative and a joy to read; this will be my 12th edition of this book I’ve bought. One very important point I should make to newcomers of this book is in this and the last edition two chapters have been left out because of lack of room, these are essential reading and should not be overlooked, they are Configuring Photoshop, setting up your preferences etc, and Bridge image management, don’t ignore these chapters, check them out on the accompanying web site they are available as pdf’s. If you’re really dedicated you might like to print them out. Also on the web site are photos to work on and video tutorials, and every few months he makes a pdf available of anything new in Photoshop. If you are totally new to digital photography and have never read this series of books before, don’t be intimidated by the amount of info in it, just stick to it over the months and all will become clear, it’s a bit like learning guitar chords after a few months it gets easier and after a year it starts to become second nature, great fun.
Remember the emphasis here is on still photography.
An excellent companion book to go with this is Jeff Schewe new book The Digital Negative Second Edition which has been published around the same time.

The is an excellent book even for advanced users

The is an excellent book even for advanced users. It updates the user on the latest tools and changes in Photoshop and Camera Raw. The website has free access to excellent videos and pdf files. I highly recommend this for beginning to advanced users.

Walerian Borowczyk (known as 'Boro') is one of cinema's one-offs. Quite simply, there is no filmmaker quite like Borowczyk. Borowczyk's films have an astonishing, magical quality. They reach a place very rare in contemporary cinema, and are quite unlike the films of any other auteur. Borowczyk's films create their own space, with imagery, sounds and music of a really exceptional power.

Jeremy Robinson discusses each Borowczyk film in detail, sometimes going through scenes shot by shot.

Goto: Island of Love was the first Walerian Borowczyk film that made a big impression on audiences and critics, winning a number of prizes. I first saw Goto: Island of Love in 1982, at Bournemouth Film School, when we watched 16mm prints as part of our film history programme. You could see there was an astonishing vision at work here. I remember above all the creation of a visceral, idiosyncratic and original world.

If I had to single out some films, I'd cite Blanche, Immoral Tales, Behind Convent Walls, The Beast and Goto: Island of Love, for their painterly sense, the use of props and costumes, and the incredible attention to detail. Very stylish, mysterious, poetic. Not forgetting the acute awareness of the history of religion and literature. Borowczyk produced some of the most memorable images in European cinema, the equal of Ingmar Bergman, Sergei Paradjanov or Andrei Tarkovsky.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: I spent a long time researching and compiling this book. It contains a huge amount of information on the amazing filmmaker Walerian Borowczyk, much of which is very, very hard to find. You have to really dig around to discover valuable information on Boro. The book relates Borowczyk to many other filmmakers and movies, from the European art movie tradition, but also the horror genre, and animation; it analyzes each of Borowcyk's movie in depth (from the sublime - Goto and Immoral Tales - to the downright terrible - Emmanuelle 5); it assesses the critical reception of Borowczyk, and the current perception of Borowcyk as a director; it contains many illustrations (some of which are rare); it considers Borowczyk's love of erotica (with illustrations); and it contains a useful bibliography and list of sources.

Lastly, my book on Walerian Borowczyk is clearly written in an entertaining style, which I hope will encourage the reader to seek out some of Borowczyk's strange, lyrical, hallucinatory and erotic movies. And if you've already seen them, I hope my book will offer some fresh insights into Borowcyk.

This book is a good introduction to (most of) his films

Borowczyk straddles the line between eurotrash auteurs (Franco, Naschy, Rollin, etc.) and art house (Pasolini and Fellini in particular). In my opinion he never made a "masterpiece", put he pursued a vision that can only be admired, as he certainly had the talent to make more "commercial" films. This book is a good introduction to (most of) his films. It does tell you what is unique about his cinematography. It does analyze the unique female-male relationships which are Boro's hallmark. It does a good job of distinguishing the good from the bad. Yes, it uses words like "sucked". But this filmmaker would be ill-served by a dry academic tone. Extremely readable and recommended.
