Members of political or spiritual cults exhibit conformity, a yen for dependence and susceptibility to authoritarian leaders. The same behavior, Deikman argues, can be observed in ordinary people--in relationships, the workplace and family life. For example, in the "corporate culture," this California psychiatrist has found threats of censure and expulsion, and an inhibition of active strategies and dissent--all favorite cult tactics. Other examples of cultish shenanigans cited include politicians' cultivation of a benign, powerful parent persona; military leaders who "imagine enemies where there are none"; the complicity of a subservient news media in supporting the status quo; and the humble compliance to God's will urged by religions. Although Deikman sometimes stretches the analogy of cult behavior too far, his provocative book uncovers a psychopathology of everyday life in a discerning analysis.

The author, a psychiatrist, argues that cult behavior is not limited to members of religious groups but is based on childhood desires for meaning and dependency that we all share. He describes normal society as "an association of informal cults to which everyone belongs," including our educational, business, and other cultural structures. Although we live in a democracy, cult behavior manifests itself in our unwillingness to question the judgment of our leaders, our tendency to devalue outsiders and to avoid dissent. We can overcome cult behavior, he says, by recognizing that we have dependency needs that are inappropriate for mature people, by increasing anti-authoritarian education, and by encouraging personal autonomy and the free exchange of ideas. This is a provocative book that should have appeal for a wide variety of readers. Recommended for most libraries.

The Human Condition

This was a really good book and I agree with a lot of what the author says. The patterns he outlines are observable. The title is a tad misleading, though. I don't think it's a trait or commentary unique to American society, but rather, the human condition, the world over.

The Nuremberg Rallies in Germany, the Kamikaze of Japan, the rabid zeal of fundamentalist Islam, ad infinitum. The whole of human history and our present condition, is flooded with example after example of cultic behavior in our societies.

It's awful when peoples' sincere desire for fulfillment and spirituality is twisted and perverted by charlatans. The key, I believe, is contained in three things: A healthy dose of scepticism, paying close attention to our inner faculties of discernment and intuition, and education and awareness.

This book does well in educating, and thereby, inoculating people against the lure of malignant cults.

"Will You Die For Me?" by Tex Watson, and "Seductive Poison," by Deborah Layton (survivor of the Jonestown Massacre) are both excellent (and horrifying) books in the same vein, for those wishing to further explore the themes contained in "The Wrong Way Home."

I think Brady is one of my favorite heroes ever. I actually wrote this one before Impact and it was slated to be book one in the series, but I'm so glad we decided to switch Impact and Collision. Brady is totally dreamy and I fell in love with him more and more as he told his story to me. I hope you all fall in love too!

Hot Bull Rider!

I swear the more I read about cowboy's the more I want to become a buckle bunny just for one night and a wild ride!

The second book is Cassandra Carr's Buckin' Bull Riders series follows on the heels of Impact. In this story we get up close and personal with the "King of Rodeo" Brady Parrish. He is tasked with a promotional gig for his sponsors on the rodeo tour and is paired up with Leah Fitzpatrick, the "Ice Queen" of figure skating.

Leah is reaching the tail end of her figure skating career. An Olympic gold medalist, holding national and world titles, she is less than thrilled when told to go on a rodeo tour to help rekindle her career after an ankle injury. It is bad enough that she has the reputation of being cold both on and off the ice, but now having to flaunt the nickname she hates, she is ready to get her promo photo shoot over with. After donning the stereotypical skating dress that she wouldn't be caught dead in on the ice, she meets the man she will be paired with for the next few weeks.

Brady Parrish was more than happy to help out with the new promo tour for the rodeo. Donning his dusty red chaps and a smile, he saddles right up to Leah Fitzpatrick for their photo shoot. When he is asked to go bare chested and get a little sexy with Leah for some of the pictures, he is more than happy to do so and realizes that Leah is more interested than she leads on.

I really enjoyed this book and love the idea of the bull rider series. Something about a man that can hold his own on a bucking bull makes a woman think of that man bucking her in bed. Can we say steamy?
Brady is all charm and uses it every moment he can to sweet talk Leah into seeing what true passion is about rather than routine sex from those uptight suits she is used to. When she gets a taste of his wild side, she realizes what she has been missing but is not sure they could ever make it work with both of them having traveling careers.

Brady is not sure how to handle his feelings for Leah. He has seen her softer side and knows that her nickname does not exemplify her one bit. Having a difficult past, she just doesn't know how to handle affection and he wants to show her how great it can be to trust someone and let them love you. He pushes her limits and shows her how amazing things can be, but when the time comes to end the tour, the question of what will happen next causes heart aches, tears, and broken bones to say the least.

Cassandra Carr has created a fun and flirty series that will leave you smiling and wanting more. Her cowboys are nothing less than sexy and charming and I love how determined they are once they realize they are head over heals. This is a quick and sexy rodeo that you won't want to miss.

When she gets a taste of his wild side, she realizes what she has been missing but is not sure they could ever make it work with both of them having traveling careers. I really enjoyed reading this book and I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

Leah has accepted an unlikely gig. She is about to go on a promotional tour with her sponsors. This is nothing new to her. She is a veteran to the spotlight. This time she is touring a bull riding circuit with a bona fide cowboy. Knowing this may well possibly be her last year competing in figure skating she needs all the positive public relations that she can get. She knows that her Ice Queen persona can get her through this. Leah knows that this is only a temporary tour that soon she will be back on the ice, back on track for her career.

I loved Brady. He was the hot factor that was needed to melt the Ice Queen. He is happy. He loves what he does. He loves his life. He loves that the sponsor has saddled him with the beautiful Leah. He not only wants her, he wants her to experience all that life has to offer. He wants to make her happy. Brady gets Leah. He sees that she has built defenses. Brady uses all of his sexy southern charm to get her to open up, to let him in, and to see that there is so much more than what she has been living.

I just loved these two. They were so perfectly matched. Brady is the exuberance that Leah has been missing in her life. He is carefree and lighthearted. I don't think Leah had never experienced anything so simple and relaxed in her life until Brady. All I could think when I first met Leah was "this gal needed to get laid!" Thank goodness sexy cowboy Brady was around to help her out in that department. He did a fantastic job there. This is one hot book. Brady and Leah are smoking hot together.

Collision easily works as a stand-alone. Conner and Jessica have a minor role and are present. Nothing that happened in Impact is presented here that makes having read the first necessary to read this book.

Great book for any Avatar fan

My son loves the Avatar books. These books are quite detailed text wise and will be fairly difficult for a younger child to read and maybe even keep the attention of. I would say the average age of these books to read alone is about 9. 8 if they are a high level reader. My son had the Earth book and asked me to buy Water, Air and Fire. He carries these around in his backpack and reads them at school. If your son likes avatar and doesn't mind a rather wordy book, he will love these books.

I am attaching a page of the fire book so you can get an idea of how much text is on a page and the words it uses that most kids at younger ages won't be able to read - words like catapults, conquest, campaigns, dominant, barren, etc. My son has asked me what a lot of the words are.

Thinner than I thought.

I was looking for the story (chapter book) and this turned out to be a fact book. But anyway, I read it, our son is reading it now and we are going to buy the next one.
But I'm still looking for the story of Avatar in book form, so if anybody knows what to buy, let us know...
