About the Author
Erik Angner is Associate Professor of Philosophy, Economics, and Public Policy at George Mason University, US, where he directs the undergraduate Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) Program. As a result of serious mission creep, he holds two PhDs – one in Economics and one in History and Philosophy of Science – both from the University of Pittsburgh. He is the author of the book Hayek and Natural Law (2007) as well as multiple journal articles and book chapters on behavioral and experimental economics, the economics of happiness, and the history, philosophy, and methodology of contemporary economics.

very interesting book about Milton Erickson

This is a very interesting book about the work of Milton Erickson. Great therapists like Jeffrey Zeig analyze deeply how Erickson worked in terms of attitudes and techniques.

I don't understand the other review. Clearly, this book deserves 5 stars.

Solid Content!

This book continues to give me a lot of perspective into Ericksonian methods. I appreciate the quality. I am like the last reviewer, I don't know how it could have possibly received a 1 star review by the other reviewer! I seldom comment; however, after reading the first reviewers review...I felt I had to out of fairness to the author.

Certainly this book is not for everybody. In fact most books cater to a certain target market. I can only say by by assuming that the first review was written by someone who doesn't fall into the target market.

If you are a student of Ericksonian Hypnosis...you'll want this one in your collection.

About the Author

John M. Efron is the Koret Professor of Jewish History in the Department of History and Director of the Institute for European Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Efron's research focuses on the German-Jewish engagement with medicine, anthropology, and anti-Semitism. He has also written on Jewish political and popular culture in Central Europe, on Yiddish political satire in Poland and Israel, and on the role of sport in the modern Jewish experience. He is author of Medicine and the German Jews: A History (2001); and Defenders of the Race: Jewish Doctors and Race Science in Fin-de-Siecle Europe (1994). He is coauthor of The Jews: A History (2012). He is currently at work on a new book that will explore modern German Jewry's attraction to the aesthetics of medieval Sephardic Jewry.

Steven Weitzman is the Daniel E. Koshland Professor of Jewish Culture and Religion at Stanford University and director of its Jewish Studies program. Trained at Harvard University, Weitzman is a scholar of biblical and early Jewish literature, seeking through his research to illuminate the beginnings of Jewish culture and how ancient texts like the Dead Sea Scrolls relate to the contexts that produced them. His other publications include Surviving Sacrilege (Harvard) and Solomon: the Lure of Wisdom (Yale).

Matthias B. Lehmann is a historian of early modern and modern Jewish history, with a special interest in the history of the Spanish Jews and the Judeo-Spanish diaspora in the Mediterranean. He teaches at the University of California, Irvine, where he holds the Teller Family Chair in Jewish history. After studying in Freiburg and Berlin, Germany, as well as the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas in Madrid, Spain, he earned his Ph.D. from the Free University of Berlin in 2002. He is the author of a book entitled Ladino Rabbinic Literature and Ottoman Sephardic Culture (Indiana University Press, 2005), as well as Emissaries from the Holy Land (forthcoming from Stanford University Press).

Attractive but expensive

UPDATED REVIEW: The second edition of this book is now available at lower prices in various formats, making it more accessible. In August 2015, one can rent a copy of the book for as little as about $22 for one semester, which is probably sufficient for many students. I have changed my evaluation of the book to 4 stars and I have decided to assign the book as one of the required books in my course on Jewish Diaspora. It is a comprehensive, colorful book, with many attractive features, although one would prefer that the price for a print copy or a an e-book copy would be lower and more affordable.

I was sent an advance copy of the book, which is quite attractively designed, with up to date coverage of major trends of Jewish history since the Biblical period to the present. I am considering using it as a text for an introductory college course on the Jewish Diaspora, but I am troubled by the relatively expensive prices listed for the book, both in paperback ($72.) and in Kindle format ($50.). A Kindle book for $50 is an imposition on students who qualify for Pell Grants and other need based financial aid even at a relatively inexpensive public university. The book I currently use is Raymond Scheindlin's aptly named A Short History of the Jewish People, available in paperback for less than $15 with Amazon Prime free shipping, and for less than $10 for used copies including shipping. The second edition of The Jews: A History is definitely more colorful, with more content, color maps, and many photographs, but it is prohibitively costly, reminiscent of some of the social studies textbooks marketed for use in high schools. If the price for The Jews: A History were more reasonable, I would have no compunction about requiring my students to buy it as a basic textbook on the Jewish experience. As an update, I notice that the first edition (2008) of this book is available for RENTAL FOR $28.50, with Amazon Fulfillment.

Easy to read, the chapters are a little long because of how much text fits on a single page, but overall it's a good resource in a Judaic Studies class, and Amazon saved me a lot of money.

Paul Farmer is co-founder of Partners In Health and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His most recent book is Reimagining Global Health. thinking in fractals

Paul Farmer is to me the greatest thinker and do-er in medicine in our times. He has gotten a team of great people to deliver quality care, REALLY quality care, to the poorest people in the world, for diseases that many hard-hearted economic-minded folks thought could never be treated due to scarcity models of thinking. What I love about Dr. Farmer is the way he is filled with expert mercy and real hope. NOT optimism, but hope. And he inspires us all, with the way he SEES how it can be done.
I was in the Peace Corps in Paraguay, and just a bit ahead of his cycling between Harvard and Haiti. So I know whereof he speaks, and what he has accomplished. I have spent my career practicing medicine in the USA, and I know that all our patients need the same things-- the same help from physicians, and improvements in delivery of care. It gives me abiding joy to see his work, to hear his words. I want to give this book to every young person I know. WE CAN do things better!

Paul Farmer Explains How Medicine Should and Can be Practiced Anywhere

This book contains a series of Dr. Paul Farmer's commencement addresses at many very prestigious medical schools and schools of public health. Consistent with Paul Farmer's many previous publications, his message is that our mission on earth should be to emphasize the "option for the poor." His approach is excellent and relatively inexpensive. He deplores the transformation of healthcare in the United States from being a ministry focused on helping and healing the sick into an industry focused primarily on money. As one who entered medical school over half a century ago, I certainly identify with his message and have seen medical practice in the United States transformed by the medical-industrial complex into what sometimes amounts to no more than organized extortion.

A passionate doctor speaks about global health

Paul Farmer presents his outlook in a series of Commencement speeches, addressing the need to address poverty and inequality around the world. His experience in many countries with Partners in Health gives him authority to speak about global health issues and the inadequate measures to solve these problems. He presents his ideas with humor, eloquence and passion. However since it is a series of speeches, it can be repetitive and I learned more from his previous book, Haiti After the Earthquake, that described the challenges of that country in surviving after the devastation brought by the earthquake. His philosophy comes through with more detail in the Haiti book.
