About the Author
Abigail A. Baird is a Professor of Psychology at Vassar College. She earned her undergraduate degree from Vassar College and both a M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Following completion of her Ph.D. She was awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, at Dartmouth College.  Her numerous articles and presentations have covered topics such as adolescent brain development, cognitive regulation of emotion, juvenile justice, and manifestations of racial bias in mind brain and behavior.
    Abigail's research has received awards from Harvard University, the Society for Research on Psychopathology, and in 2008 the Association for Psychological Science named Abigail a "Rising Star in Psychological Science". Her research has also led her to be elected to several scientific societies including the International Society for Behavioral Neuroscience and the Gruter Institute for Law and Behavioral Research.  Abigail has been repeatedly recognized for her excellence in teaching. In 2000 she received Harvard's George Goethals Teaching Prize, and in 2004 was awarded the Class of 1962 Excellence in Teaching Fellowship by Dartmouth College. Her professional accomplishments also include serving as secretary of the Association for Psychological Science, Honorary Faculty Member for the Order of Omega National Honor Society, Invited Faculty to the New York State Judicial Institute and Advisory Board member on the Campaign for Youth Justice.

Good Thinking

Regardless about how one feels about the "politics" of this book, this is a great text by virtue of how each page presents more correct and usable information than most of the contemporary textbooks currently on the market. And for the money it's a fantastic buy! The graphics/pictures are excellent in their vibrancy and detail. The up-to-date research has to put smiles and wonderment on instructors and students respectively. The "upclose and personal" chapter introductions make the course content real and contemporary, e.g., Megan Meier & the Close sisters. I really dig the timeline fold out in the back. For an introduction/general course Ms. Baird's text is a model/standard to be studied by students, instructors, and authors.

Engaging Text Book in Hybrid Magazine Style

This textbook is thin, but packed with information that's displayed in a captivating and interesting method. Since the publisher wants potential customers to sign up just to preview the inside, I will break down the layout:
-The chapter title pages have a full or double-page picture with a short event that relates to what the chapter is about and then the main content is set up in pretty much the same logical layout as your standard text book.
-There are a lot of different types of graphs scattered appropriately throughout each chapter. Most of the pictures have captions asking the reader to think about and relate the picture and the content in critical ways.
-The vocabulary terms are conveniently boxed on the side AND placed in bold font within the text.
-The chapter ends with a concise summary and a little review test of 20 questions per chapter.
-The text is split into three columns instead of two, which is a great way to break the text up into easy-to-read pieces.
The general style that the textbook was written in is witty yet efficient, and all of the information in it is current enough to be quite relate-able.

Great text book

I am very happy with this book. The chapters are short and engaging with colorful text and illustration. It is also well written. Many text books are dry and not as enjoyable or accessible as this text. I think more schools need to start using this style book. It's more like a magazine than a text book. My favorite part is the humor. The author really knew what they were doing when they wrote this book.

Melissa J. Morgan started going to sleep away camp when she was eight years old and didn't stop until her first job after grad school refused her request for eight weeks of summer vacation. She's since quit that job to become a full-time author. The only reason she didn't go back to camp is that her husband refused to join her. Melissa lives in New York with him and Bugle, their Chocolate Lab.

Cute Light-Read!

I bought this book a while back when I was horribly sick and really in the mood for a cute little book that would make me smile. And yes, I did get just what I wanted.

Natalie cringes at the thought of going to camp this summer- she wants to board the next plane home and forget this even happened. And when she gets there, for a while, she's even more dismayed at the thought of actually staying at the camp for very long. She wants her friends and her air-conditioned house. But when she actually lets herself have fun and warm up to her cabin-mates, she finds that camp is probably the most fun she's ever had. She meets some great girls and their friendships are just what she needs to get through her camp experience. Natalie discovers herself along the way, and in the end, doesn't want to leave.

This book was a real page-turner, although I can't say I was ready to pounce on the sequel. I enjoyed it though, and would recommend it to anyone in the mood for a cute book that will make you smile and maybe even laugh out loud.

Camp Confidential-and so it began!

Girly and a little stotty teenager. Mom sends to camp build character. Makes new friends. Meets a cute boy... And there's the twist! Sounds familiar? Well, I personally thought the book was a little too predictable and familiar, but it was very enjoyable and light to read. I find myself continually reading this over and over again because it's nice to read it just for fun! Yeah, yeah... It might sometimes be just that book about being a teenager and how it should relate to other girls out there, but it really isn't that bad! It isn't bad at all! Maybe it doesn't teach you hard vocabulary or teach you a strong lesson, but I still loved it! Recommend it to all who want a short book to read with your friends!

Have you ever had an enormous secret that spilled? Well, that happens to Natalie, the main character in Camp Confidential Natalie's Secret by Melissa J. Morgan. Natalie never really wanted to go to camp, but unfortunately, her mom made her go to build character. Imagine going to camp in Nowheresville, Pennsylvania for eight long weeks without any of your friends or family,when you don't even want to go! She will meet new friends, and even a boy that she has a crush on. I could not stop reading this book, every page has a new twist, and it was a definite page turner! So, read the book Camp Confidential Natalie's Secret to see if Natalie will survive her big private mystery, getting out.

About the Author
Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) was an English philosopher, political theorist, sociological theorist, author, and editor. He served in the later capacity for the "Economist" from 1843 to 1853. Spencer touches reality

Expansive thought, driven by the engine of evolution, with fascinating insights and conclusions. This book examines the limitations and virtues of religion and science concurrently. Each contributes in their conclusions, with their interpretations, to what is reality. "What is" is the starting point. I recently read Martin Eden,..and Jack London cited this book so many times I had to look for it. Wow. Darwin. Spencer,..can you imagine how these guys blew the legs out from under the church? The book is an enjoyable read,..well, maybe for me,..as I am a scientist, a biologist,..but then,..what's your excuse for claiming stupidity,.. you have one life to live,..are you a farm animal,..a wally world denizen,..c'mon,..elevate your mind, and read this classic.

I think it's a shame that not many people read Spencer anymore.

Even if you don't agree with every premise of this book, Spencer still offers some very nourishing food for thought on many subjects. And it's very interesting to follow his reasoning process.
