An exceptional read

The Medal is an exceptional book about love & hope . I could not put the book down, I needed to find out what was going to happen to the characters I had just met and already empathized with. The author does an excellent job of making you feel the range of emotions of the main character, Bethany. She is like all of us -strong but weak, sure but doubtful, solitary but needing comfort. By struggling with her faith and believing in her "angel" and Padre Pio, Bethany finds the inner peace she needs and deserves. It shows that in our darkest times we are not alone. We just need to have faith and believe in the unbelievable. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

The Medal: A NovelThe Medal, by Kerriann Flanagan Brosky is the most inspirational, incredible book of hope and faith you can ever read! I couldn't put it down; it's the type of book that once you start it, you just want to keep going until the end - and once you reach the end, you wish there were more to it, because you get so involved in the character's lives and it takes you on such an emotional roller coaster, and once finished, you're a believer in Padre Pio and miracles in general.

Bethany, the protagonist, is a person that many women can relate to. She's a dedicated worker, a loving daughter and questions faith and and endures hardship like everyone else. In the book, she deals with her father's illness - Multiple Sclerosis - and watches the man who raised her, whom she adored, deteriorate over a long period of time and she felt helpless as to what she could do for him. Though she had friends and people that she loved in her life, she seemed to feel a loneliness and despair that comes from watching someone you love suffer so much. Over time, you see Bethany being able to cope with her every day life less and less - until a mysterious stranger named Jimmy enters her bakery and changes Bethany's life. He teaches her about Padre Pio and the more she learns of him and the more she believes, you see miraculous things start to happen, beginning with the incredible power of prayer.

When I First heard of this book and learned what it was about, I questioned whether it would be something I would enjoy or be able to relate to. As someone who does not belong to the Catholic Church (and am not Christian for that matter) I wondered if I would be able to relate or believe in what I was reading. I was in for a very pleasant surprise. Anyone at all can read this book - anyone of any faith, belief or even agnostics - because I guarantee that the reader will come away with feeling that this wasn't a religious book in nature, but one of hope, positive thinking, and that we are not alone. Anyone who is suffering from an illness or caring for someone who is suffering can relate no matter if they practice a particular faith or not. Everyone needs to believe that keeping good thoughts matter, and that any offering of comfort from whatever source, is necessary to keep on going. That's what The Medal offers. Hope, comfort and inspiration. It will make you feel good, feel more positive and help give you a brighter outlook on life's most trying times. There's not anyone at all that has not, or will not go through a difficult time at some point in their life and this book offers hope and comfort that everyone can benefit from.

I had tears in my eyes through much of this story. The author makes the characters come to life and the style of writing is so visual, you almost feel like you're watching it play out before you. She's an amazing author. I have read all of her non-fiction books and she's just a phenomenal writer, I can't recommend it highly enough. Read this book, you'll be forever glad you did!!

In one of those strange coincidences that often occur in publishing, this is the second book this summer (after Martha Ackmann's The Mercury 13) to relate the little known but remarkable story of the 13 women who trained in the early 1960s to be Mercury astronauts, and though a slightly less satisfying effort, this is still compelling reading. These women passed many of the same grueling tests taken by the male Mercury astronauts, but they were opposed by virtually everyone in power at NASA. In addition to bringing many of the 13 to life, Nolen, a foreign correspondent for Canada's Toronto Globe and Mail, does an excellent job of describing the social context in which they operated. She explains that although institutional sexism and a strong antifemale bias among most players at NASA certainly existed, American society at large was not yet ready to permit women to be placed in the roles for which these women were training. Even many women felt this way, and Nolen explains how Jackie Cochran, one of America's best-known female aviators, spoke forcefully against sending women into space. Cochran's motives, according to Nolen, were complex; she didn't want to antagonize powerful male friends, she didn't want other women to overshadow her achievements and she felt that women weren't physically capable of performing such activities. Although Nolen interviewed 11 of the original 13, her material isn't quite as personal as Ackmann's. Nonetheless, this is impossible to put down and deserves widespread attention. 30 b&w photos.

The most readable, yet the least accurate of the books about this story.

After years with no books on this subject, all of a sudden three came along. This book is the most readable and personal of them all, with a bouncy tabloid style that grips far more than the more scholarly competition. Yet it is let down with a number of inaccuracies and misinterpretations that make it the least accurate of the books on the "Mercury 13."

Better books to read to understand the true story are the excellent The Mercury 13: The True Story of Thirteen Women and the Dream of Space Flight, the fascinating Right Stuff, Wrong Sex: America's First Women in Space Program (Gender Relations in the American Experience) - and, most recommended, surprisingly, Into That Silent Sea: Trailblazers of the Space Era, 1961-1965 (Outward Odyssey: A People's History of S). The last book listed here manages to give a correct social, cultural and historical context to this story that all three of the other books lack.

Horribly written by a novice space historian

This is one of the many space history books written by someone whos only exposure to the field was in researching for this one book. The book drives one point repeatedly: at the time women were expected to stay at home with the babies and not fly in space. Anyone with knowledge of this era in American history knows this, and this is one of the only bits of actual information provided.
The author does not include dates or references where appropriate. All references are collected in alphabetical order at the end of the book--no foot or endnoting. The lack of dates is at points so great that it is easy to get lost in the timeline of the story, as most of the events of the book take place in a three year span that Nolen jumps around in.
Perhaps the most distressing thing about the book is the tone she takes when talking about NASA and the Mercury 7. At points she inserts off the cuff remarks about NASA leadership or members of the senate that called a hearing into the cancellation of the women's astronaut testing. Nolen takes the anti-NASA side saying that NASA refused to let the testing of the women continue and that they are at fault, when her own book indicates clearly that NASA never wanted the testing done in the first place and had no plans for female astronauts in the 1960's. Many at NASA were insulted, rightfully so, when a group of 13 women said they wanted to be astronauts when NASA had tested hundreds of men and only accepted seven!
Of all the space history books I have read (and I have read well over 30) this one is the worst. I highly advise not spending time on this book.

The new standard for telling this story.

Full disclosure: I am the daughter of Gene Nora Stumbough Jessen who was one of the FLATs (Fellow Lady Astronaut Trainees) and so I am more than casually interested in this story. Plus I've met the author, so I'm going to be even less professional, and call her Stephanie!
Every student of the US-Soviet Space Race should have this book. The FLATs have had their story of thirteen women who passed the 1960's astronaut tests (famously described and pictured in "The Right Stuff") told in several media, but Stephanie's is the most thorough job. Her book is liberally sprinkled through with transcripts, letters, interviews, and other primary sources. She presents all sides of the issues, and is exceptionally fair to those who can no longer speak for themselves, especially Jacqueline Cochrane.
Stephanie does an excellent job drawing the reader into the late '50's and early '60's, painting what seems to be an accurate picture of that era. She lets the primary sources speak for themselves and generally comments just enough to keep the narrative going. For example: in my lifetime I have only known John Glenn as a somewhat liberal Democrat senator from Ohio, and part of the Keating Five. Stephanie ably describes how especially he was seen to be nearly a god during the Space Race. We've seen that before in books and movies, but Stephanie's book tells the story from these exceptional women pilots' perspective.
In a nutshell: this is a darn interesting story, and Stephanie writes well and had a good editor. An easy, fascinating read.

Complete but difficult

Medical Injuries in the Martial Arts. What could be more useful? Not this book. Have a muscle strain? A "...frequent complaint in the martial arts"? No problem! Just note:

**"The posterior muscle mass is more commonly traumatized, and in severe cases, may be indistinguishable from ligamentous sprain or fracture. Therefore a history of the injury mechanism often obtainable from the the instructor and careful neurologic and radiographic examination may be required..." **

I picked this page at random. Really.

Of course you could say: "Neck strain is a common, and it's difficult to tell how serious it may be. You may want to get an X-ray and tell the ER doctor exactly how it happened so he could rule out nerve damage." But hey, where's the fun in that?

Oh wait: this book is supposed to be for the layman, perhaps the Sensei, to be familiar with possible injuries and quickly refer to them and advice on what to do next. Most every injury listed, regardless of how minor, is recommended to visit a doctor, get expensive tests, and is treated as if it were a major event. Therefore, there is no need for this book, as its own advice is to throw it out and visit the E.R.

Can it be useful? Sure. If you can translate the above passage without hesitation, and can walk-back with common sense how serious an injury may or may not be, and distinguish it from the dozen similar injuries listed. But it's not a quick first-aid guide. Nor a doctor's guide. Nor a guide on how people may be seriously injured by karate moves, either to cause or prevent them. Not sure what they're aiming for.

Complete and accurate. Readable, not over long, thus 3-stars. But make your own choice about the practicality of this guide in your dojo library.

After purchasing numerous books on potential injuries and preventitive measures, this book stands head and shoulders above the rest as an exceptional resource. It lists a variety of techniques used in martial arts and the resulting injuries and options to repair the body. It is logically broken down by body area (head, neck, etc.) and easy to follow and use. Whether you are a practitioner, Sensei or Doctor, you will find this information very very helpful. I highly recommend it.

Even before then, her attacks on Islamic culture as "brutal, bigoted, [and] fixated on controlling women" had generated much controversy. In this suspenseful account of her life and her internal struggle with her Muslim faith, she discusses how these views were shaped by her experiences amid the political chaos of Somalia and other African nations, where she was subjected to genital mutilation and later forced into an unwanted marriage. While in transit to her husband in Canada, she decided to seek asylum in the Netherlands, where she marveled at the polite policemen and government bureaucrats. A vivid chronicle of a triumphant escape from cultural confinement

Autobiographies often suffer from late-life authorship--a time when the fires are damped and the events foreshortened by time. This one--by a woman still in her thirties--is an exception to nearly every rule of the genre. Not least for its electrifying readability: it consumed every free moment of the two days it took to finish it. Putting it down was simply not an option.

This book will grab your imagination like no other, transplant you into a world you have probably never known, and introduce you to the intimate world of a muslim family swept by circumstance all over Africa, Arabia, and Europe. The complex interaction of tribes, clans, cultures, extended families and nations (and their consequences) isn't dryly analyzed, it is woven into a personal drama with the momentum of a locomotive. The love of family rides perilously over the jarring railbed of refugee life, of ancient and modern Islamic conflicts, all of it recounted with real compassion in beautifully clear English. This multilingual immigrant needs no ghostwriter.

Unlike the collection of editorial essays which comprised "The Caged Virgin", "Infidel" is a consistently focused narrative of a spectacularly eventful life launched almost inadvertantly into an unparalleled adventure in moral courage. But there's far more here than a clash-of-cultures story well told. There is no targeted rush toward a predestined liberation. The revelatory discovery of western freedoms comes late in the book and gathers like a slow-motion sunrise. Only in the final chapters does she defect from Muslim culture, graduate from the University of Leiden, become a Dutch legislator, a target of Islamic terrorists, and an incendiary revolutionary for Muslim womens' rights.

More than simply discovering western libertarian values, she shows a deep and critical understanding of their history, how they've shaped the modern world, and shows their prognosis for dealing with the festering problem of Europe's Islamic subculture. Her extraordinary life seems more an ongoing work in progress than a settled iconographic career. She has recently moved to America--the adopted home of another famously eloquent and consequential revolutionary: Tom Paine.

This is a fantastic description of life in Islam. Ayaan Hirsi Ali explains in very honestly what she has had to deal with in her life. As an ex muslim myself, she is a brave example for the rest of us women struggling with the threats and violence of Islam. This is a must read book for those who do not have the time or patience to study Islam and Islamic culture. It should be mandatory reading for High School Students in the west. Anyone who has to risk their lives to tell the truth is revolutionary. These days the truth is a revoluntionary act and Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a pioneer and my hero.

A most remarkable book.

Every now and then, something truly remarkable is written. This book falls into that category. I have read very few books which hit me as hard as this book did.

This is a remarkable woman. She has crossed an impassable divide, and has been able to reach the other side--after considerable suffering, work, and tears. Her journey has not yet ended. I would imagine much more awaits her. She seems to be fated to say what many do not wish to hear.

How well does anyone in the west understand Islam, and all the things it does to people? Do we really understand female genital mutilation, beaten women, arranged marriages, the compuslive need to hide the feminine, and the complete loss of individual freedom? Americans still don't have a clue. This book makes a very real effort to explain a few things. It is painful, but important reading.

One can read the various books on Islam--with great value. This book makes it personal, and painful. It is time the west came to its senses, and faced reality. It is not "one world," all cultures are not equal in value, and the individual matters much more than the collective living in darkness.

On a more mundane level, the book is well-written, gripping, heart wrenching, powerful, painful, touching, and impossible to put down. Read it, and you, too, will feel its remarkable value--and message.

I wish this wonderful woman well . She has done so very much to open our eyes.

the unofficial guide to togaf

My biggest problem with the official study guide for TOGAF that it only appears to be available in PDF format. I like to scribble in a book as a study. For only $20, this book comes printed. Kevin Lindy's book also has the advantages of being shorter and having more practice questions. Good news all around.

Some of the questions in Kevin's book are harder than the real exam questions. Especially "which 5 of the following 8 are true" type questions. But they were good for reinforcing knowledge and looking for keywords in the answers.

I found a couple of questions with suspect errors so I'm giving four stars instead of five. But it was still worth it. I found it significantly easier to learn from Kevin's book than then official study guide. It was a great investment of $20.

Helped me pass the part1 Foundation Exam.

I have to attribute a fair amount of my success in passing the Part 1 Foundation exam to this book. It went into just enough detail to give a good understanding of the terminology, vocabulary and concepts/ideas/objectives of the key parts of TOGAF and the ADM. Many of the chapter end questions were of the 'Which of the following 3, 4, etc are part of the..." . Most of the mock exams on the internet seem to focus on the 'Which is NOT a part of ...." I think, together - this book, in combination with other internet sources for mock exams can equip you with enough confidence to get through the 'memorization' oriented Part 1 exam.

I did the class but it left a few missing pieces, so I used this to augment the information and to provide a double check. It was great - very clear on topics that were muddy in the class and had a good subset of the information.
