Left in the care of his aunt while his father is at sea, 11-year-old Digory Beale is plagued by nightmares of his father dying in a terrible storm. Digory has always been afraid of the sea, preferring to draw when other boys were competing for sailing jobs. When word comes that his father's ship has gone down, it seems that his worst fear has been realized. Digory must set out for Plymouth to learn his father's fate. His aunt tells him not to return unless he finds his father alive. With eleven children of her own, she can't afford another mouth to feed. Digory and his 9-year-old brother Cubby (who decides to follow Digory rather than stay with their aunt) face a difficult journey with little food, no money, and dwindling hope that their father is still alive.

In Plymouth, Digory and Cubby receive the crushing news that there were no survivors from their father's ship. With their hopes of reuniting with their father dashed, the boys are alone and scared. Just when they think things can't get any worse, Digory and Cubby are framed for stealing. A man named Henry Winstanley intercedes on their behalf and this chance meeting will drastically alter Digory's life.

Henry Winstanley takes the boys to be servants at his home in Essex, but Winstanley's home is no ordinary country estate. An engineer with a fondness for gadgets, Winstanley has filled his home with many whimsical inventions including a "Flying Chair" (an early version of the roller coaster), a mechanical dragon, and fountains that shoot colored water into the air. When Winstanley discovers Digory's artistic talent, he offers him an apprenticeship. Digory thrives under the engineer's tutelage.

When Winstanley receives news that the Eddystone Lighthouse, a beacon that he designed, is in need of repair after severe storms, he and Digory rush to Plymouth. Digory will finally have to face his fear of the sea in order to assist his beloved mentor.

While Digory and Cubby are fictional characters, Henry Winstanley was real. In 1698, he took on what many thought was an impossible task: construction of a lighthouse off the treacherous Eddystone reef near Plymouth, England. The Eddystone Lighthouse sustained severe damage during its first year of operation and was rebuilt with a modified design. For five years not a single ship was lost to the reef. In 1703, the lighthouse was destroyed during the Great Storm, the worst weather disaster in Britain's history. Henry Winstanley and five others were killed when the lighthouse succumbed to the sea. The Eddystone Lighthouse was later rebuilt, and thanks to Winstanley's vision, thousands of lives have been saved.

Elvira Woodruff has written an exciting and well-researched tale of courage and friendship. The book includes a glossary, a map of England in 1700 highlighting the key locations in the story as well as an extensive author's note about the life and accomplishments of Henry Winstanley. Highly recommended.

My 5th grade son begged me to read this ... Glad I did!

Some of the topics were surprisingly dark for this age group, but that's why they ate it up. I guess 10 and 11 year old boys are ready to start challenging themselves a bit! The story is gripping and well-told, and I enjoyed it all the more when I got to the end and found out that much of it was actually based on true people and events.

Way too much, unless you are a expert

Wow, what a book about preaching. The book is long, detailed, and yes tedious. I was warned before hand concerning the book, thanks Matt, of the nature of the discussion. Buttrick is a master, there is no doubt. He knows every thing and every one concerning preaching. This book is not for the average preacher, most would have no clue what he is talking about, it is mostly theory. This book is beyond me, I am not that good yet to practice this methodology. But the book was helpful in polishing the pulpit. The book is like fine sandpaper, it puts on a beautiful finish on a preacher, but you have to be polished before the paper would do the job. If you are a top notch preacher that needs the most challenging material and style, this book is for you. If not, read "Preaching" by Calvin Miller this year.

Preaching Paralysis by Analysis

I remember asking Fred Craddock about Buttrick's book at a conference. He looked at me with a grin and said, "I told David that the book was way too long and that he had no real research to back up the claims." As a preacher and a homiletics nerd it is fun to geek out with a book like this. I remember reading it as a young minister starting out and thinking I had found the Holy Grail of preaching. Buttrick seems to convey that he has cracked some homiletical code for preaching compelling sermons. After reading the book and preaching for 20 years in the local church I can tell you that this book is simply one preaching professor's attempt at a science experiment that doesn't prove anything. If preachers really tried to prepare sermons based on his "formula" they would drive themselves mad. More importantly, it would be a waste of time because, as Craddock noted, there is no proof that his theories are true or effective. In fact, I once watched a video of Buttrick preaching and was less than impressed. Granted, it was one sermon but if he was applying his theories in that sermon the proof was not in the pudding. Most listeners in churches would be bored stiff. I gave the book three stars because Buttrick put a great deal of effort into the book and it does contain some useful ideas about preaching. Let me save you some money and tell you the premise of the book which can be useful: Always consider the listener's perspective when preaching and vary your movements of thoughts so listeners don't get bored.

Best preaching book I have ever read

This is hands down the best preaching book I've ever read. I was so moved by the book that I considered getting a masters in theology at Vanderbuilt. This is coming from someone whose read over 100 plus books on preaching and oral communication. I consider it the preaching bible. My copy is marked up, highlighted and the pages are being held together with tape due to the many rereads and repeated references to various sections of the text.

The book is long, detailed and encyclopedic. However,the pain you endure while reading and attempting to incorporate the concepts into your sermons will result in pleasure for all those who hear your much improved sermons. I noticed an immediate improvement in my sermons after incorporating the concepts.

My only warning, this book is probably not for the first time preacher. If you have to give a talk for the first time and you need some advice, this is not the book for you. If however, you are someone with a basic understanding of how to put a sermon together, and have traveled the journey from sermon idea to delivery a few times, and want to take your preaching to next level, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

At a crossroad...truly a godsend

Having read several personal development books, not necessarily targeted towards women, when I came across SKIRTS in the Boardroom, I was intrigued by the title and wondered what deposits this book could make into my life that had not already been made by the other business books I had digested. Being at a crossroads in my life, I really wanted to begin the new year taking steps toward the things I was really passionate about doing and cleaning house of anything that would keep me from acheiving this goal. Little did I know, this book and its content, would be a godsend.

Starting with a chapter on Confidence, Marshawn Evans weaves stories from her own life and its struggles with issues that women, young and older, face in corporate America, entrepreneurship, and life. With chapters on staying the course, differences in gender communication, networking, developing your personal brand, and more, this book is like having your own personal development coach at your fingertips.

What I really love, is that the book is written so conversationally and how easy I was able to relate my personal situation to the stories shared in the book. Secondly, the wrap-ups at the end of each chapter, keeping the important points fresh in your mind. And lastly, the worksheets at the end of each chapter, which really make and keep you accountable. Who knew it was so hard to think of five meaningful words that actually described me and why... I'm still working on two more!!

This book has really helped me begin to get on track and I recommend it to anyone who needs guidance at any stage of their lives. I know that the book is written with women in mind, but I honestly think men can learn a lot from its content as well. It's definitely a book to keep, revisit, lend to friends, and give as a gift. I am on my way to maximizing my potential and living out my purpose.

Every Working Woman Must Read This Book

I just started reading this book and to my surprise it is uniquely different from any other I've read in this genre. Marshawn Evans so freely gives of herself in the way she expresses her own personal story that you immediately like her and relate to her. This is an additional bonus to what is to comes in this book. Like I said, I've only just started reading this book and I've had to put it down to reflect and sob like a baby. It has already been a blessing and made a difference in my life. I saw myself in her story and found new revelations and affirmations that women rarely get in their work environments or anywhere else. This book is motivating and aligned to biblical thought and principals that anyone can relate to regardless of their background. Marshawn Evans is a young woman that has managed to share her incredible talents, abilities, and insights with every person previledged to read her book. This should be a mandatory text for every woman who aspires to achieve or do anything!

This book is a must-have for any woman who wants to get in the boardroom or at least learn how to climb the ladder of success while in the boardroom! Marshawn shares her strategies for success and gives little tidbits, like "confidence is like hairpins" that make the book enjoyable to read. You may find the book hard to put down, but you have to if you truly want to become a skirt in the boardroom!!

As a soon-to-be interventional pain fellow I need to be solid in my ability to read, understand, and interpret MRI imaging, especially of the spine. This book is providing that for me. I've just recently purchased it and have gone through a few chapters. It's easy to read and understand and is providing just the right amount of information. It nails down key points and common findings and simplifies the learning process in a step-like fashion. I like that the images are clear and that normal ones are compared to varying degrees of abnormal ones. It has definitely strengthened my ability to recognize MRI findings, especially the degenerative ones that are ubiquitous in the world of pain. I find that I pick up almost all, if not all, abnormalities that are written on the radiology report. I also like that I now understand when to use the different pulse sequences to help confirm different findings. Definitely an excellent resource and one that every pain doc or anyone who wants to have a better understanding of reading MRIs should be required to own. I'm really looking forward to going through the rest of the book.

Very Good

This is a really impressive book, or should I say a battle plan that has really caught my attention with its description. As I started reading I was amazed by interesting techniques offered. It made me a stronger person and more aware of machinations of enemies in our midst. A must have for anyone looking to win in life’s situations. Highly recommended.

Have the edge through mind control

This book teaches its readers great information about mind control. The idea of controlling minds amazes me. I never thought it really exists and there’s something to learn with the ability to influence. Yes, I agree with the possible mind control is intimidation. I am usually a victim of intimidation where I end up with no choice. Mind control is never easy and it’s truly wonderful to know that some people really possess this kind of ability to manipulate someone’s mind. It’s an advantage to have learning about the techniques of mind control, not to take advantage of people, but merely to defend oneself and win.

Really good book and worth the read for sure!

The key takeaway from this book I would say is the fact that I learned the mind can do so much more than I previously imagined. It truly is amazing what you can do with your mind and you can tip the balance of any situation just with a thought. I feel like now I am more focused, conscious about my surroundings and kind of like more in control of my life. Really good book and worth the read for sure!
