If you love to read and love professional wrestling, then this is pretty much heaven.

I read a lot and I watch wrestling a lot. That said, I don't read a lot of books about professional wrestling. I've read Mick Foley's first two books, I've read Chris Jericho's book, and that's pretty much it. While I am a fan of history, as well, the books I read tend to be fiction. I am, however, also an erstwhile wrestling columnist and, while I don't read them often anymore, used to read columns about professional wrestling quite a bit and even had the dream of one day compiling my columns into a book. That time has come and gone mainly because I lost the majority of my columns years ago. "The Doc" Chad Matthews, who writes for the same site I used to, has gone one better than that, though. He's taken his considerable opinions about professional wrestling, added in some statistical analysis, and combined it all into a fantastic read. I read fiction because I want to be moved to emotion. I want to cheer with the bad guys, and mourn when something awful happens to them and I want to follow along with the story.

In crafting The Wrestlemania Era the way he has, Matthews has, in essence, told a story. It may not be a story with a clearly defined beginning, middle, and ending, but that's okay. Sometimes you have to work for your entertainment and that's something that makes it all the more rewarding. In this book, The Doc covers basically thirty years of professional wrestling and analyzes--in reverse order (countdown style)--who the best 90 performers from that era are. The gamut runs from Starrcade 1983 until the end of 2012. Why 90? I have no idea. Personally, I would have gone with 100, but I would assume because breaking it up into neat 30 person tiers has a certain appeal. Thing is, though, not all of these stars started wrestling during this period, so more is covered in some cases than just those thirty years. This book reads like a who's who of professional wrestling and regardless of how much of a wrestling fan or historian you are, you're going to learn something.

If you're a young fan, you're going to learn a lot and get a general idea of where to place your heroes along with the all-time greats. I have a hard time saying that this book defines where a wrestler belongs, because I disagree with some of it (especially how the top 10 rank,) but it certainly will give you an idea. There were places I literally couldn't wait to praise Matthews for (full disclosure: while he and I are not friends and have never actually spoken as of this writing, we've always been on friendly terms and have, of late, been messaging each other a little bit,) but there were other times I wanted to throw my copy of his book across the room. The couple of times I actually did were the times I was glad only the paperback copy was available and I didn't damage my Kindle. I loved his passages about Eddie Guerrero, Lex Luger, Diamond Dallas Page, Ricky Steamboat, and Chris Benoit. I hated the ones on Stone Cold Steve Austin, Edge, John Cena, and The Rock. His one on The Rock, though, is brilliantly written and made me completely rethink my current opinion on him.

That's why I hated it. While I don't mind my opinions being challenged, I despise when they are outright changed. The Doc really is a brilliant writer, and because of this, it's easy to live and die with his descriptions of these wrestler's careers just like you would with a Brandon Sanderson novel. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I was a wrestling fan for all but 4 years of the span he covers here, and know most of these characters. In that sense, I was reliving my experiences with these guys and re-experiencing many of the emotions I felt along the way, while also being reminded of things I'd forgotten over the course of time. Personally, I took this book in segments, and I love the way in which it's laid out. As I mentioned above, there are three tiers with 30 wrestlers each and he lays out at the end of each tier how the numbers broke down. More than that, though, he strives to emphasize the importance of the performers in another way, as he devotes more words and pages to the guys in the first tier than he does to those who rank from 90-61.

I really enjoyed this aspect because I liked reading about 10 passages at a time, and then as we got down to the real nitty gritty, going five at a time. This allowed me to savor what I was reading, while also being able to put a greater focus--as Matthews, himself did--on those who earned their spot in the top tier. Everything about the way this was put together makes The Wrestlemania Era a professional wrestling tome for the ages, and it couldn't have come along at a better time, because now that the WWE Network has come along even if you haven't lived through the times Chad is talking about, you can do so. If you get interested in exactly what made DDP vs. Macho Man so good, you can watch the matches on The Network. If you wonder exactly how ridiculous Jeff Hardy's table spot on CM Punk was, pop on SummerSlam 2009 and check it out. Want to see Hulk Hogan redefine himself when the NWO formed? Click on Bash at the Beach 1996. To me, these two products are each others' perfect companion.

I don't just like this book, I love it and I would recommend it for any fan of any age. You'll laugh, you'll be moved to tears, and you will certainly think. That's all you can ask of any form of entertainment, and while this combines two forms of entertainment into one, I believe instead of your entertainment value doubling, it's raised exponentially. Buy this book, read this book, love this book. You won't regret it. This is an instant classic, and I can't wait for either the follow-up in a decade or The Doc's next undertaking, which should come much sooner. If you are a fan of professional wrestling, this is the book for you. If you want to read arguments about who are the best 90 professional wrestlers of the last 30 years, this is the book for you. If you love to read and love professional wrestling, then this is pretty much heaven. Welcome to The Wrestlemania Era Era.

The Doctor Is In...

As a longtime fan of professional wrestling, I have waited for years for someone to write a book that discusses the medium in both a passionate and intelligent way. For a long time, fans like myself were left with wrestler autobiographies and a few, select wrestling-based websites to fill our need for non-kayfabe literature. After reading The Wrestlemania Era: The Book of Sports Entertainment, I am thrilled to say that author Chad Matthews has finally given us the informative, thoughtful and downright entertaining read that fans have so long desired.

Matthews’ book is both a labor of love and a love letter to the world of professional wrestling. The centerpiece of his work is a countdown of the 90 greatest wrestlers of the “Wrestlemania Era,” a period that encompasses nearly 40 years from the late 1970s to present day and includes superstars who made names for themselves in various promotions including WWE, WCW, ECW and other smaller promotions/territories no longer in business. Matthews uses a wide range of criteria that includes in-ring performance, financial success, look, etc., to create one of the most unbiased examinations of a portion of the history of professional wrestling ever recorded.

Along with his knowledge of the sport’s history, one of Matthews’ greatest qualities is his writing style. Each chapter of the book is engaging and none feel like a carbon copy of what came before. When highlighting one wrestler, he may cite a personal experience when justifying that superstar’s ranking (Edge, for example). In another section, he does a fantastic job of putting a wrestler’s career into perspective and context despite troubling circumstances (Chris Benoit). His greatest strength however, may be his ability to inform the reader and back up his claims without coming across as arrogant. You can sense Matthews’ perfect blend of enthusiasm as a fan and wealth of information as a member of the “wrestling media” in every sentence.

For those unfamiliar with Matthews’ work, it should take just a few pages for a newcomer to become a fan of his writing. For those who enjoy his work as “The Doc” on LordsofPain.net, you will not be disappointed here. While some might expect this book to be an extended “Doctor’s Orders” column, Matthews’ output here actually allows him to expand on his subject matter in a way that is difficult to accomplish online. Everyone’s favorite wrestler of the past 35 years is highlighted in this book and despite my love and knowledge of superstars including The Rock, Randy Savage and CM Punk, Matthews’ all-around perspective only enhanced the way I view their careers and legacies. Whether you’re a long-time, die hard wrestling fan or someone becoming familiar with the product for the first time, Matthews offers something for everyone.

Simply put, The Wrestlemania Era: The Book of Sports Entertainment is an in-depth, highly entertaining and informative look at the best the world of professional wrestling has had to offer over the past four decades. For my money, it lives up to its title as THE definitive sports entertainment publication and stands alongside the absolute best offerings from the world of professional wrestling.

Does Professional Wrestling bring back memories from your childhood? Do you recall some of the biggest names over the past 30 years? Are you still a weekly fan to this day? This book will be a treat for you to enjoy from start to finish. From the mildly interested to the passionate, this book is absolutely worth it. Not only has Matthews complied an impressive and comprehensive 'Order of the Greats,' he's woven their respective histories and careers together in a manner that paints a cohesive landscape of Wrestlers from then to now. How their careers began, some of their famous matches, their allies and sworn enemies...and he accomplishes this without the 'red tape of the wrestling biz,' in a no-nonsense fashion based on their true and pure Wrestling grit.

You will not find a book like this anywhere else. If you're a long time fan and stepped away from the ring, go ahead and lace your boots back up. A few pages in to this book, you'll find yourself counting down until the next Monday Night show. And if you're a current fan, you'll enjoy this book more than the next Wrestlemania!

In her time, Edna Lewis has quietly upheld the virtues of a good meal and the Southern cooking she learned as a child. Her grandfather, a former slave, joined with freed slaves to found Freetown, a Virginia farming community. So Lewis grew up with the food at hand, fresh buttermilk, for example. She moved to New York City early on where she cooked for and rubbed shoulders with artists and actors, musicians and writers, cooks and Communists. And through all her years, through her life and through her cooking, she described the most elegant, simple line. It's there for you to see in each of her recipes, the way she approaches flavor.

Authenticity is always an issue in southern cooking each state has its fiercely held opinions and sacred recipes but Lewis and her young friend and protege, Scott Peacock, have unbeatable credentials. Peacock, a restaurateur, is from Alabama, Lewis from Virginia, so their culinary reach extends from the Tidewater to the Gulf. Great Survey of Classic Cuisine. More instructive than many

On the surface, this book bears a strong resemblance to the volume by James Villas and his mother, Martha Pearl Villas, entitled `My Mother's Southern Kitchen', as it is written by a younger man and an older woman, both of whom have serious culinary chops, and where the younger man does most of the actual writing. The differences between the two books, however, are much more instructive.
First, in this book, both authors are professional restaurant chefs who both grew up eating southern cuisine and who specialize in cooking it. In the Villas' book, neither are professional chefs. This means that there is just a bit more fussiness about the methods and ingredients in the Lewis / Peacock recipes. One example is that while both pair of authors endorse homemade mayonnaise, Lewis and Peacock go an additional step by recommending and giving a recipe for homemade baking powder, especially for use in making biscuits. Skeptics, please note, I have made biscuits with my White Lily flour and homemade baking powder, and the homemade stuff does make a difference in eliminating the faint metallic aluminum taste in the stuff from Clabber Girl or Count Rumsfield.
Second, in this book, the two authors are originally from two very different parts of the south. Edna Lewis was raised in rural Virginia and Scott Peacock grew up in Alabama. Both now work in urban Georgia. The Villas' are native of low country North Carolina. Therefore, this book is much stronger in discussing regional differences between, for example, the peanut oil cooking Alabama and the lard cooking Virginia. While the Villas' book deals with some regional issues, such as the dispute over the source of Brunswick stew, it is largely oriented around the cuisine of a single North Carolina low country household and extended family.
Third, in the Lewis / Peacock book, the authors are not mother and son, so there is no chronic family sniping over who is the better cook. Peacock defers to the older Lewis, but they clearly approach the task as equals.
The upshot of all these differences is that our Lewis / Peacock book is at the same time more true to its rural, old South roots while presenting these traditions with a very professional interpretation. A perfect example of this is the interpretation of fried chicken in the two books. Jimmy Villas says his mother's fried chicken has gotten great response from the likes of Craig Claiborne, Pierre Franey, and Paul Bocuse, yet it is obviously the kind of recipe which would be done in a 20th century home, using Crisco and an electric fry pan. On the other hand, the Lewis / Peacock recipe is clearly more rustic and one which would suit a large restaurant with its hotel pans and walk-in refrigerators. It uses lard, and both a brining and an overnight marinade in buttermilk before breading and frying.
I believe this means that if you want to learn a lot about classic southern cooking techniques, our Lewis / Peacock recipe is the preferred volume. This dedication to true traditional methods even extends to stock making, where a smoked pork stock is as important an ingredient to southern vegetable and soup cooking as a good veal stock is to French soup making. Another illuminating Peacock basic is his methods for making chicken stock, one yielding poached chicken meat and one yielding a very fast stock from scraps. Another great traditional recipe is for cooked dressing for things such as cole slaw. I have not seen this in any other modern book, while it is a staple preparation in books by James Beard, for example.
While the Lewis / Peacock book has a lot of well-known southern dishes, it also has many which are totally unfamiliar to us northerners. One of my favorite discoveries is `Caveach', a cold fish salad which the authors speculate was named from a corruption of the Spanish `escabeche', especially as the dish is prepared by marinading white fish in an acidic dressing. Another very nice discovery is skillet scallions, an exquisitely simple way of fattening up spring onions with butter. The variety of recipes for several common southern vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, corn, greens, and cabbage is a testament to the very vegetarian diet and long growing season.
If I were looking for a dish for a classic southern recipe and I had these two books from which to choose, I would start with the Lewis / Peacock book. I have made several dishes from this book and all had methods which were very simple to follow and all of which give superior results. This even includes the recipes for preserves and pickles, as the professional chefs are more likely to have a far greater well of professional experience from which to draw than the talented amateur Villas clan.
Be warned that this book does not deal at all with barbecue, grilling, Creole specialities or Cajun cuisine. For that, you will have to consult specialists in those fields. On the other hand, there are many little gems that are rapidly becoming better known to Americans at large through cable and PBS food shows. My finding a classic southern recipe for a `BLT' salad makes me think that Alton Brown is really nothing more than a closet southern cook who tried to turn this salad into a Tuscan panzanella salad on his `Good Eats' show about tomatoes. He would have been more honest and truer to his Georgia roots to confess that the salad was as American as his Weber grill.
This is an excellent interpretation of traditional southern American cuisine as seen by two very accomplished professional chefs. Not every dish is famous and some are the authors' own creations; however, all are true to their roots, and none are more complicated than they have to be.
A highly recommended source for home cooks and students of southern American cuisine.

This is what a cookbook should be!!

This book meets every criteria of a first rate cookbook. (1) The recipes are uniformly well tested and good tasting; (2) The directions are clear and easy to follow; (3) The production value is high with large type, excellent pictures and easy to read bright white coated paper; (4) When combination of dishes such as Country Captain Chicken and Coconut Rice are appropriate, they are recommended; and (5) It authoritatively addresses its subject - Southern Cooking. Very few books meet all of these criteria. The authors and the publishing house are to be congratulated for their achievement.

I have tried a number of recopies from this book and while I can recommend them almost without exception, I would like to suggest two of them to start with. For a wonderful Sunday dinner make Country Captain Chicken and serve it as suggested with the Coconut Rice. I use chicken thighs instead of cut up chicken. It's easier to control the cooking times when all the pieces are the same size. It has always been a smash hit with company or when my children and grandchildren come to visit. I do cheat and use the Goya canned coconut milk. For a picnic make the Southern Pan-Fried Chicken and serve it cold together with the Potato Salad made with homemade mayonnaise. Brine the chicken for both of these recipes - it does make a difference.

As for the lard question - just like Coconut milk I am not going to make it myself! I am into cooking but not that much. Also, my wife would take strong exception to my tying up the stove for three days to render lard. Go to your local grocery store. If they do not carry it, ask them to order it for you or go on the net and find some.

Buy this book and cook from it for one month. If you are like 99% of the people in this world, you will learn to appreciate a whole set of tastes.

Every recipe you ever wanted is in this book

That is,if you are a southerner or you appreciate southern food. OK,so the reviewer from New Jersy is upset because he doesn't get a recipe for lard and thinks the writer chefs should have spent more time out of the South-Miss Lewis spent a lifetime in NYC but thankfully,it didn't ruin her cooking.
The recipes are easy to follow,make sense,don't "weird-up" the classics by doing things like adding lemongrass to grits and the text is interesting.There are recipes for many different kinds of dishes. No,its not low fat but who cares? You gotta love these two for reminding me of when people dared save their bacon grease in a can!
The two chefs have a sweet relationship that was recently profiled in the NY Times.It comes through in Chef Peacocks writing.
This book resonated with me in an emotional way. If you grew up with traditional southern food,or wish you had,buy this book!

This book defines the Jewish view of human sexuality and differentiates it from general Western conceptions. The Torah regards sex as holy, provided by God for humankind, and as a positive aspect of life so long as it is performed within the context of marriage, with the pleasure of one's partner in mind, and with the worship of God paramount. In Friedman's view, this basic Jewish notion of intimacy sets it apart from the Christian version, which considers intimacy more negatively. Pleasure, prized by both religions, is often seen by many Christians as a temptation to evil, something to be abstained from in this world in order that other rewards may be enjoyed in the next. Judaism, by contrast, believes pleasure to be sanctioned by God, seeing it as a bridge between the profane and sacred realms. Where Christianity can find a conflict between the physical and the spiritual, Judaism finds them united in a God-created whole. Friedman's is a fascinating presentation of a sensitive subject and one that is highly recommended.

Rabbi Avraham Peretz [Cary A.] Friedman is a nationally renowned speaker and author. He received semichah from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. An important book for moral thinkers

I think that this book is crucial, and should be read by anyone who wishes to understand the role that pleasure plays in life's pursuits. Although accesible and enlightening for readers of any backround, it will be particularly informative for anyone who wishes to understand Judiasm's view of physical pleasure, and its stark contrast from Christianity. I cannot reccomend this book enough.

A Must Read for Every Orthodox Adult

This book beautifully presents the Torah hashkafah (philosophy) on intimacy between husband and wife. I recommend it to every Jewish adult, and anyone who wants to know what Judaism really says about this most crucial topic. Well-written and thorough.

This is an excellent and important book -- not to be missed

This book undertakes a difficult topic with wisdom, grace, and sensitivity. This is a must-read for anyone who is interested in a genuinely Jewish approach to marriage and sexuality. Rabbi Friedman stages the rapproachment of faith and materiality with the subtle eloquence of a true scholar, yet never loses sight of his audience. Unlike other books that I have seen on this subject, Marital Intimacy is ultimately more concerned with moral truth than cultural indictment, and as such is a true joy to read.

This is a great book for anyone looking for a biblical perspective on intimacy, and has questions about the different aspects of marital intimacy. While this book is more marketed towards women, I love reading this with my husband, and I think it helps a lot with tackling any tough situations as they arise in your sex life. I would recommend for any married couple. :)

I really like how J.Parker intertwined God's word with simple steps to change and a prayer. She pinpoints some of the most important and sometimes difficult areas and thoughts we deal with in marriage and gives God's perspective. I am reading each devotion daily for one week and going on to the next one on Sunday morning. That way I can really soak up the messages.

"Woolland provides teachers with a powerful tool to develop students' literacy skills. It is based on the premise that writing drama addresses literacy in the broadest sense. When students write drama they employ reading, writing, speaking, and listening with attention to voice, register, tone, and narrative structure. The author utilizes "process drama," emphasizing exploration through structured play and small classroom improvisation, rather than performance for an audience. This process is designed for teachers who have no background in drama and work with students from 6 to 13 years old. The five chapters in the "Play(ful) Writing" section cover key elements of playwriting; dialogue, character, story, nonliteral meanings, and observation. The "Practical Projects" section gives teachers nine age-appropriate playwriting suggestions that are well detailed without becoming prescriptive. This section starts with a familiar tale for the youngest students, Jack and the Beanstalk, and uses Forum Theatre methods where the teacher takes a role along with the student; it ends with a project for the oldest students, The Fall of Troy, that provides more complex characters, action, and story line. Excellent Book

This is an excellent book for those wanting to diagnose and address multi-layered generational curses. Knowing you may be dealing with a curse is not enough. General prayers do not work for some curses. This book gives a thorough examination of the symptoms and issues, the root causes and the step by step instructions on how to overcome and be free. It's already a tough lot that we have to pay someone else's bill and breaking through to victory takes real work but for those like myself who may find themselves having to address and break long standing generational curses - then you need this book. I have found no other book as thorough as this one. I highly recommend it!!!!!
