About the Author
Liz Curtis Higgs has been telling tales since she wrote her first “novel” at the tender age of ten. Careers in broadcasting, public speaking, nonfiction writing, and children’s books brought her back to her first love–fiction–at the turn of the 21st century.

Since 1986, Liz Curtis Higgs has presented more than 1,500 inspirational programs for audiences in all 50 states as well as Germany, England, Canada, Ecuador, France, and Scotland. In 1995, Liz received the highest award for speaking excellence, the “Council of Peers Award for Excellence,” becoming one of only forty women in the world named to the Speaker Hall of Fame by the National Speakers Association.

Feature articles about Liz have appeared in more than 250 major newspapers and magazines across the country, and she has been interviewed on more than 600 radio and television stations, including guest appearances on PBS/Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly, A & E, MSNBC, NPR, CBC Canada, BBC Radio Scotland, Focus on the Family, and Janet Parshall’s America.

A member of Novelists, Inc., Liz now focuses her writing efforts on historical fiction, particularly novels set in eighteenth-century Scotland. To aid in her research, she has visited the U.K. on eight occasions, including her "Heart for Scotland" 12-city U.K. book tour in October 2003, and she has collected nearly 700 resource books on Scottish history and culture. A graduate of Bellarmine College with a B.A. in English, Liz is a member of the Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society and the Dumfries & Galloway Family History Society, as well as supporting the National Museums of Scotland, Historic Scotland, and the National Trust for Scotland.

And her third novel, Thorn in My Heart, was a #1 historical fiction Christian bestseller, followed by a second historical bestseller, Fair Is the Rose.Whence Came a Prince, the latest novel in the series, publishes in March 2005. In addition, Liz is the editor of an annual newsletter, The Graceful Heart, with 25,000 readers, and is a columnist for Today’s Christian Woman magazine with her back page feature, "Life with Liz." Her first video Bible study series, Loved by God, was released in March 2004.

On the personal side, Liz is married to Bill Higgs, Ph.D., who serves as Director of Operations for her speaking and writing office. Was She Who You Think She Was?

Mary Magdalene has received a lot of press in the last few years. Does she deserve it? This is a wonderful study of what we do know about Mary of Magdala and her relationship with Jesus and his disciples.
The first half of the book is Liz Curtis Higgs' modern-day tale of Mad Mary and serves as a basis for the Bible study to follow. You will not want to put down this story.
We usually use pretty serious works for our ladies Bible Study. But we have really enjoyed the Bad Girls of the Bible series by Liz Higgs! The modern version of the Bible story is very useful in applying the lessons to our own lives. Liz employs lots of sarcasm and personal experience to get her points across. We recommend all of these books for personal or group study.

Our Sunday school class did all of this authors bad girls of the Bible books/studies and have now moved on to "Unveiling Mary Magdalene" Liz continues to engage us with her humor and bibical insites. Don't forget to watch the video that complimnets the book and workboook

Rex van der Spuy is a video game designer and writer. He s written Foundation Game Design with Flash, Advanced Game Design with Flash and Foundation Game Design with AS3.0. Rex has designed games and done interactive interface programming Agency Interactive (Dallas), Scottish Power (Edinburgh), DC Interact (London), Draught Associates (London), and the Bank of Montreal (Canada). He also builds game engines and interactive interfaces for museum installations for PixelProject (Cape Town). In addition, he created and taught advanced courses in game design for the Canadian School of India (Bangalore, India). When not writing about games, making them, or playing them, he amuses himself by building experimental, autonomous, self-aware, multi-cellular parallel universes out of shoe boxes, scotch tape, spare milk bottle caps and bits of string . When given lemons...make lemonade.

This is a book on making games for web browers from Rex van der Spuy, who is well-known for his books on Flash game programming. The source code is available at the Apress site, and I recommend downloading it if you are considering buying this book. What you will find is that he able to build an impressive set of games, almost matching his work in the Flash environment.
The text of the book is clear and concise, as we have come to expect from van der Spuy. He doesn't waste time bemoaning the weakness of the JavaScript language or complaining about the deficiencies of the HTML5 platform. He just gets to work and shows you how to make your game work in this environment.
As an experienced game programmer, I found this book very helpful in porting my games to the HTML5 platform, better than the other books I've read. If you are trying to learn game programming, van der Spuy is a great teacher, but you probably would be better served learning game programming in Flash before tackling HTML5.
Either way, this book is well worth buying. I initially bought the Kindle edition, and I found it so useful that I bought the print edition as well.

A must have for all new game developers

I purchased this book early this year but have not had a great deal of time to get through it due to school. Now that I've been in the middle of winter break and finally have had a chance to sit down with it... I honestly feel this has been the best purchase I have made since I've been a developer.

A few reviews here have mentioned an abundance of code errors and editorial problems, or issues with their copy of the book but in my experience - this just isn't so. I am halfway through this book and have only found three very insignificant errors so far so if you somehow end up with a bad copy, just contact the publisher or return it for another copy... Keep in mind is is also available through Safari for free if your a student, or you may purchase the eBook edition through Apress.

I've found the Author to explain things very well, the projects throughout the book are incremented in difficulty just perfectly and he keeps things very entertaining. If your not a gamer you may not fully appreciate this book, but then again what are you doing trying to program games then? While you may not end up making the next big console FPS, you will get a handle on basic programming concepts and feel a lot more confident using JavaScript.

I think it is important to understand this book is kind of focused on a niche market, this isn't designed to make you great with graphics, web development, or programming in general. It is purely focused upon using JavaScript to build games... but if you know a thing or two about game development, the logic that is used is fairly difficult and can be applied in other areas once you get a handle on things. An example from the book regarding programming an interactive fiction game explains later that the logic that was used to create items and interact with them is exactly the same type of logic used in databases... so even non-gamers may get something out of this.

I highly recommend this if your looking to understand the logic behind games, if you really want to get involved with the advancement of web based gaming, or are just new to game development and have a web developer background. While this is a great entry level book to this subject, I suggest not picking it up until you at least have some basic programming skills... even Code Academy tutorials should be enough to get prepared for this.

Learned a Ton

I read this book as sort of a refresher of stuff I had learned programming in Actionscript, but it really taught me so much more. The author gives you a quick run through HTML, CSS, and some Javascript basics, which was actually better than some dedicated books on those subjects because it was succinct. In fact, I recommended it to a friend that wanted to learn HTML and they loved it. He then shows you how to manipulate DOM elements and make some simple games that way, before taking you into the world of Object Oriented Javascript and HTML Canvas games. There were very few typos, despite what someone else mentioned, and the ones that were there were usually in a code comment or some other harmless text. In fact, a few times where I thought there was a typo, the problem was that I hadn't fully grasped it. And all the code examples worked perfectly, so whenever there was doubt, you could always refer to them. And those code samples were invaluable for me. So much to glean in the way of organizing your code as well as building games.

I knocked it down one star because the part about bouncing a ball off another ball wasn't very well explained, and I was really looking forward to that part. I know that it's a deep topic but his suggestion of Googling "vectors" wasn't very helpful for me as I only found more complicated math "stuff" by MIT folks and others far more math-inclined than I am. I must have read that chapter a hundred times but his short, single-sentence explanation of each step didn't help me visualize what I was doing at all, so in the end I just decided to blindly use the code block he provides when the situation comes up. They're about to release a sequel to this that I hope goes into greater detail about this and other physics/trig stuff for programmers that need a bit more guidance visualizing them (I've also discovered Foundation HTML5 Animation with JavaScript, a classic Actionscript dynamic animation book rewritten for Javascript, that I plan to read next). Don't let that one negative deter you from picking this one up. There was PLENTY of material the author did cover and he did a great job explaining it.

Confusing, drawn out

the book started off so promising. the bet, the meet, the courtship. but then it took a crazy turn and felt so made up. alice never heard trents side of the story. he called the bet off before he proposed. then she leaves and stays mad and then comes back with this whole safe thing. it was left field and just got stupid after she made him woo her with the same terms as the original bet. there is also the eye color change and trent originally driving a porsche to a masareti. by 67% of the book i just wanted to throw my kindle. only read this if its free

Way to long

This book really could have been cut in half. I hate drawn out mundane story lines and that's exactly what I got here. The stubbornness was uncalled for. Both characters frustrated me so badly that I skipped about 50 percent of the book. Good thing it was a free read!

Alice was described as "not to dark and not to light", she also had blue eyes. This could have been a description of a white woman with a tan. Don't get me wrong, I read ALL types of romance. I was disappointed because this book was categorized as BWWM and that's what I was looking for. I wanted to identity with the h but I'm black and I've never met another black person that had blue eyes ( unless they were wearing colored contact lens). Getting past that deception it was just hard to get into the story. I kept trying to like the H but he came across as sly,deceitful,and calculating. The h seemed way to bold. She would have been happy with a "wham bam thank you ma'am" on the first date.

View your life through the lens of Christ's life

"Reflections on the Christian Life" spans eighteen chapters. In these chapters, Mr. Esolen walks us through different parts of Jesus' life as recorded in Sacred Scripture. The reader is then called to examine his life through this lens. From the Nativity and His Presentation in the Temple to His Passion and Resurrection, we are called to see the meaning of all the major moments of Jesus' life and how our life relates to His.

The book is also littered with both historical and literary references used in comparison to the life Jesus lived. We see the pride of Cicero in stark contrast to the humility of Jesus. We also see Augustus Caesar's claim to be the prince of peace, when in reality, Jesus is the true Prince of Peace. Mr. Esolen also makes the book personal though by adding his own stories of both his past and his family. It is always appreciated when an author can relate his own personal life to his work, because sometimes we can just feel so distant from the likes of Cicero, Shakespeare, and Dante.

The chapter that hit me between the eyes was titled, "The Hidden Life." It talks about how we want big things for ourselves and great things for our children, but we should be focusing on the small things. Mr. Esolen explains that Christianity is not made up of only the big things like writing a lot of important spiritual works or talking at fancy places, but Christianity is in the small things as well. This was humbling to read, as I have to admit that I strive for the grand and fancy things. I'm ashamed to admit it but it's part of what drove me to start my blog in the first place. I wanted to make a difference on a large scale and be known for making a difference. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to make a difference, I need to be more humble and not seek glory.

This book was an excellent Lenten read for me, but I feel one could read it any time during the Church Year and still grow from it. If you want to understand your life through the lens of Christ's life, you would do well to read this book, because your life doesn't make sense without God. "Reflections on the Christian Life" merits a 5 star, simply because I can't give it more stars. I look forward to future releases from Sophia Institute Press as all their books I have reviewed so far have been scholarly and well-written.

Esolen has done the best English version of Dante's Divine Comedy. With Reflections on the Christian Life he joins the "little battalion" of modern Christian apologists whose work is winsome, sane, and effective.

I read everything Esolen writes, not only because he's deeply perceptive, but because he expresses his thoughts beautifully. You'll want to re-read many paragraphs. I've ordered extra copies for my children.
